From some basic overviews to specific features, Google has compiled its playlist also that we can easily browse.

This certainly raises concerns about user privacy and that’s exactly why Google published another post trying to address the Privacy issue.

Before I say anything about the privacy issue let me make it very clear that I do not have anything against Google Ads and I also understand that the tracked information is not personally associated with my Google account or me in anyway.

One thing that surprised me is the opt-in/opt-out methods. By default each of us is opted-in this new ad technology and each time your browser cookies are deleted your preferences are reset which means if you’ve opted-out once and deleted cookies you are opted-in again.

Installing a plug-in to permanently avoid the information from being tracked somehow does not sound right to me, sounds more like a forced installation, "not cool".

VideoSurf recently released a nifty Firefox extension, which lets you scan through the video on Youtube and in your search results even before you play they video..cool right? (Download from here)

The idea is to save time by scanning through the strip of thumbnails of the video that is instantly created and skip the video if the you don’t find what you are looking for or if the thumbnails don’t seem interesting enough.

I have tried using this plugin on sites like Vimeo, Metacafe, Break, Dailymotion, etc. however, it just worked on Youtube and Google Search. It turns out that this plugin works only on Yahoo Search, Google Search, Youtube and Friendfeed for now, although it would be nice to see more video services on the list of this extension.

The extension earlier existed as a Greasemonkey script which only worked on search results..

The following image shows how this extension adds a image strip of the video and by clicking on any of the thumbnail you can start the video from that point on.  Not only that but the extension is designed to recognize if there is a face in the thumbnail and by checking a checkbox you can choose to see thumbnails with faces only..

Interestingly the extension manages to create thumbnails from video services other than Youtube, for example Vimeo. See the Image below …

However Youtube made it public today that it is working with a limited number of partners to make their videos available for download. It’s up to the partner to decide if the video can be downloaded for free or for a price through Google Checkout.

Though techies who are already downloading videos from Youtube using scripts and softwares think this move is senseless as these scripts let me download all the videos on Youtube for free.

But don’t forget internet is not all about geeks and techies, a major chunk of users are the ones who are still learning to attach a file to their e-mail or trying to figure out how to add people to their Facebook profile.  Its users like these who would benefit from a simple download link at the bottom of the video player.

The paid videos are not DRM managed which means they can be shared and transferred from one device to another easily but these videos are licensed under creative commons which are mostly to do with non-commercial use of the video. Click here to read more about the Licenses.

During these tough economic times Google has been trying everything it can to post strong quarterly results which is why we are seeing advertisements almost on all Google properties and new revenue generating models trying to bring in more money. For example, we saw ads on Google Image Search, Google Finance, etc..

Although it is unclear if Google will charge a % of whatever the partners make by selling the videos it’s very clear that Google Checkout revenues will soar if this initiative hits the right node.

This feature works only on Gmail chat not on the GTalk client window. It certainly is a good feature as you don’t have to juggle between windows or tabs to watch video and chat.

All you have to do is just copy a video link and paste it in your chat window. Once the link is recognized, video thumbnail will appear in the window click on it and it will start playing the video in the window above the chat window.

This feature applies to Youtube videos only. I tried using Vimeo and Break.com’s video links but they fail to show the magic.

Translation works on videos with captions only and its pretty simple to do. Just move your mouse over to the arrow-like button on the bottom right, Now click on the the triangle next to the subtitle menu (CC) and choose your prefered language of translation.

I tried translating the demo video posted on the Youtube blog, first from Italian to English and then to Hindi and thats when it kinda broke. See the screenshots and you will know what I mean.

Anyways, based on the official announcement, going forward you can link to the favourite part in the video instead of linking to the entire video.

For example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUjoXlnk0H0#t=0m15s, this link will start the video from the 15 seconds onwards instead playing the video from the beginning. Notice the additional parameters #t=0m15s. That is what tells the player to start the video at the 15th second onwards, You can change it to #t=1m15s to start the video at 1 minutes 15 seconds onwards.

Now that’s a good one to have right? Now you can pinpoint the part you liked in the video instead of sending the entire video to your friend.

Why are these videos being uploaded to YouTube and not warez sites? Warez distributors want these softwares to be downloaded by as many users as possible because most  keygens and key generating softwares are infected by Trojans, Worms and Virus which once installed comprimises machines security.

YouTube has premium content and each URL on YouTube carries a lot of value in terms of PageRank. To top that, Google’s unervisal search pattern pushes this content right on top in its efforts to blend Videos, Images, News, etc… for a better users experience. Thats exactly why these videos are being created on YouTube because the chances of making to the top are more when compared to any other warez site.

I hope YouTube makes a note of it and does somethign about it OR wait until one of these software companies slap Google with a law suite, that wont be pretty!
