Professional bloggers rely on the revenue from ads on their respective blogs. However too many and jazzy ads can irritate the readers which eventually forces them to look away from the site.

While there is no other option but to show ads a blogger has to maintain a fine balance between showing and not irritating the the regular readers at the same time.

There are quite a few WP-Plugins which help you show ads based on defined criteria. I will discuss one such plugin called “Who Sees Ads” (click here to download) in this article which I think is the BEST among similar plugins and cannot get any better (maybe)!

It leaves total control in the hands of the bloggers in terms of who sees ads and who does not. The plugin lets you pick from the existing rules or define your own rules to show ads.

The Image below shows you the pre-defined rules which can be used to create context. I’ve created a context to hide a huge block of ad between the title and the article from the readers who come to TNerd.com directly or through any other referral other than a search engine and the second rule shows ads on the old content only, in this case content older than 2 days is considered old.

Once the Context is created, all you got to do is copy the line of code and paste it in your template or within the article.

The video below shows you how to create a context and place it on your template. (Watch the video full-screen for better viewing)

Once this plugin is active you will certainly see some loss in revenue but that’s totally worth it as your regular readers will be happier to see the content without any ads.

Alternatively this plugin can be used for any coded that you want to show to a selective group of users. For example if you want to show a particular discount coupon only to registered users, you can place the image coded using this plugin and select the rule to show it only to logged-in users.

Click here to download Who Sees Ads for WordPress (Tested on WP 2.7.1)

On a daily basis, the administrator probably has to login to moderate comments more often than any other activity like writing and publishing post. So this post will focus on how to reduce the time on moderating comments. Moderator is a wordpress plugin and an Adobe AIR application that sits right on your desktops and allows you to moderate comments. Sounds like saving a lot of effort and time if you use this application.

This is the first release and hence only allows you to moderate comments. In this version however you cannot reply to the comments. However, the developer of this application Daniel Dura has plans of adding this feature for the up comping release. As of now following are some of the features of this application.

Viewing unmoderated comments.

Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.

Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.

Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.

Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.

In order to use this plugin you should be using wordpress 2.6 or above. You’ll also need Adobe AIR which you can get from here.

Installation

Download the current plugin bundle from here. (moderator_plugin.zip | 72KB)

Unzip the contents of the archive and place them in your Wordpress install directory under {wordpress install}/wp-content/plugins. You should now have a directory called

Answers.com offers a nice little feature to be installed on blogs and site which will help the readers understand the jargons bloggers and webmasters often use in their write-ups.

This application can also be a part of your Firefox and work on any site you visit or by installing a desktop software this feature starts working on any application running on your computer.

AnswerTips for Blogs and Sites:

The service is called AnswerTips. Double click on a word on any AnswerTips enabled webpage and a balloon pops-up showing you more information on that particular keyword you’ve selected, e.g. Meaning, pronunciation, translation, etc..

Readers can also personalize the information they see on this balloon. They can choose to see Dictionary, Encyclopedias, Synonyms & Antonyms or Translate the word in several languages.

Just click on the personalize link as shown in the image below to change the information you see on the balloon.

Installation is very easy, just copy 3 lines of code and add it to your template code. The best part is that you can choose if you want to add AnswerTips to the whole site by adding the code to the template or just one page by including the code in the post. This works on WordPress blogs, we haven’t tested on Blogspot or Typepad but it should work with those services as well.

The badge you see below shows that the script is installed and you can use the functionality by double-clicking on any word.

For example if you double click on any word on this page you will see the information balloon but not anywhere else on TNerd.com because we’ve included the code in the post and not the template.

Click here to get the code for your blog or site.

AnswerTips for Desktop Applications:

AnswerTips can also be installed as a desktop application to make it work on any application running on the desktop. Once installed, hold down the “Alt” key and click on the word you want to lookup and release the “Alt” key, the balloon shows up with more information. At the time of installation, the application tries to change your default search settings to Answers.com, but Google is quick to block this attempt and notify you about it.

I tried using it on several applications and it worked on all of them, the image below shows AnswerTip working on GTalk.

Click here to download the desktop application

AnswerTips for Firefox:

By installing a Firefox plugin you can make AnswerTips work on all the sites you visit. Unlike the way it works on webpages and desktop applications, in Firefox user will have to select the keyword and select this option from the context-menu (right-click menu).

Click here to download the XPI for Firefox.

Wordpress exploit scanner comes to the rescue of webmasters whose Wordpress installation was compromised in the past or webmasters who believe their Wordpress is not secure enough to keep hackers out.

Wordpress exploit scanner is developed by Donncha O Caoimh based on one of his readers request. Once installed this plugin scans wordpress installation for possible exploits, backdoors, suspicious code strings, etc..

Click here to download Wordpress exploit scanner.

Note from the developer:
"This plugin searches the files and database of your website for signs of suspicious activity. It will not stop someone hacking into your site, but it may help you find any uploaded or compromised files left by the hacker.

When a website is compromised, hackers leave behind scripts and modified content that can be found by manually searching through all the files on a site. Some of the methods used to hide their code or spam links are obvious, like using CSS to hide text, and we can search for those strings."
