5 Months ago, in May 2008 Google had launched Google Sites for anyone and everyone who wanted to create a Website. From then there have been more than one million sites created with this Google App in different countries and different languages.

Getting started with Google Sites was not difficult at all. With a click of a button you can or you would have already created different type of pages and embedded documents, calendars, photos, videos and much more on your website.

Another pretty simple and user friendly feature is this App is the Built-in editing tools which allows you to make text and formatting changes. It also gives you several other options such as inviting people to edit or view your content with the option of changing access levels whenever required.

However what’s new this time around is that Google Sites now is in 38 Languages. With the count of languages increasing it would definitely be a lot easier for people around the world to build, host and share their own websites on Google Sites.

The Google sites will use the Browser settings to detect and display the preferred language among those supported. However you still have the option of overriding the browser language and setting your own language preference directly in Google Sites.

To override this setting you need to click on the “User Settings” on the My Sites page and change accordingly.

Mentioned below are the 38 languages that Google Sites now are supporting with this release: Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, English (UK), Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

Other than the addition of the new languages, Google sites has also made some improvements to the existing services such as the movement of the toolbar to the top of the page so that there is clear demarcation between the site content and application functionality and the site settings have been shifted to this navigation bar.

Another feature added is to let the user or the owner informed on what changes you have made to the User Settings page.

I am sure there are many more to come but with these new added features it definitely makes life a lot easier.

People assume that a blogger’s life is pretty easy. Blog a few posts and if the blog is popular, at the end of the day walk away with good bucks. I agree that this logic might hold true in few cases but in most of the cases the administrator has to keep track of thousands of intricate details from writing posts, managing the structure of the site, ensuring smooth running of site at the back end host, keeping track of feeds, using various means of social media marketing and many more. In such case stamping blogging as a laid out job would be nothing but highest level of ignorance. I don’t say that it’s as tough as writing the code from scratch and maintaining a website, but still it’s quite an indulgence in terms of time and effort.

The resources however to make routine jobs easier are growing on a regular basis and today we are going to discuss one such resource. The resource is a service offered by a website. QuarkBase, is an online service to find complete (No service can guarantee this) information about any website. QuarkBase says complete information but I’d say a good amount of information. The data is pulled from 30 data sources including Alexa, twitter, delicious Digg and so on. Although there’s a lot of information displayed but I particularly like the information related to number of posts from a blog dugg and related information. In short the information related to the social media is something is really like. Following is the snapshot of social media information related to mashable.com.

The interface is amazingly simple. Just enter the site you wish to see the information and you’ll the information almost instantaneously, if that site was already queried earlier by someone else. For a new site that’s never been submitted to QuarkBase, it’d take close to 30 seconds to pull out and consolidate the information. This service is pretty helpful for bloggers to keep a track of how well their site is doing in terms of both traffic and social media presence.

Not to take away the importance of keeping track of your competitors and how well they are fairing. QuarkBase could be used as a competition tracking tool if used wisely with right heuristics.
