With growing number of avenues to share and spread your content online it’s also important to show how strongly you are placed on social media networks and how much readers like your site and its content.

That’s exactly what widgets from services like Feedburner and Feedblitz are for. It’s a way of convincing your readers to subscribe to the sites RSS by telling them that these many people have already subscribed because they believe that the content on this site is useful why don’t you subscribe too?

TwitterCounter.com adds to the list of widgets which shows the number of users following you on Twitter. This widget like any other can be placed on your site/blog which looks very similar to the feedburner widget.

Click here to follow TNerd on Twitter

TwitterCounter.com offers more than just a widget. It offers a paid service ($100) called Featured TwitterCounter User, where a user profile is displayed on the homepage for a week. In addition it shows users information such as, since when TwitterCounter has started following the user, Average growth per day, Predictions for next month, etc..

So far the service has been used by 66,715,749 blogs and sites. The service is getting popular by the day and the number of blogs using the widget is a testament of its success.

TwitterCounter also shows you a list of Top 100 users which it topped by Barack Obama with 92,000+ followers, followed by Kevin Rose in the second place with 65,000+ followers as of 6th of October.

I exchanged a few e-mails with Boris, a Dutch serial entrepreneur to know the roadmap of TwitterCounter.

“TwitterCounter has been growing like crazy as you can see. We have buttons on thousands of websites. We plan to start offering a ‘Gold’ member plan for a small fee which will show you more stats.” – said Boris.

He also mentioned that the “Featured User” on TwitterCounter is in much demand; currently there is a waiting time of close to 2 months. “We have a lot of demand so we will raise that amount soon.”

While I think this is a useful and essential service for the blogs who want to brag about their reach on services like Twitter, I also think that having too many widgets showing number of followers will look a little cluttered.

So, I am looking forward to a service similar to FriendFeed which will pull the subscriber/follower information from different services and show it on a single badge. Somebody do this and count yourself in the list of Web 2.0 entrepreneur right away.
