Skype is the biggest VOIP app in terms of user base. It is currently serving over 400 million users and adding another 350k new users every day.

Josh Silverman, President at Skype, mentioned in one of the very recent interviews with BBC that Skype is on track to hit the 100 Billion calling minutes in 2009 alone.

The numbers not only shows how BIG Skype is but it shows that the demand for VOIP services is even more BIGGER and that’s why you see companies like TruPhone, Fring, Nimbuzz, FriendCaller, Jaja, etc.. are holding their grounds and growing with time.

The launch of Skype iPhone App simply puts companies selling VOIP based services in a tough position because few of these services integrated Skype services in their own app to attract users, and it worked well for them, well it worked until now!

Mere number of iPhone users which hit the 17 million mark in 2009 underlines the importance of the iPhone app for Skype which is looking for new avenues to add more calling minutes to its business.

The first version of Skype for iPhone does not offer a lot of functionality but lets you make calls over WiFi networks and chat with other Skype users on your regular network. Skype will soon have to release the next version will a whole lot of new features if it really wants users to switch to Skype from the existing services which are offering much more than just making cheap international calls from iPhone.

As I mentioned earlier, Skype app for iPhone is not available for download yet, it will hit the App Store on Tuesday. I will update this article with the download link as and when available.

With Apple store being too nagging to approve applications for iPhones, people often resort jail breaking to get these applications working on their phone.
