Google Doc’s team announced a new feature which lets users use Google Doc’s as an online storage for any files.

If the files that are being uploaded are not in the Google docs format (i.e. Presentations , Spreadsheets, Word Docs, etc..) are limited to 250mb. Each user will have 1GB free space on the server. If you wish to have extended space, pay $.25 for an extra GB a year.

This added space remains common between Picasa, Google docs and Gmail. Meaning if you’ve already bought some space from Picasa, same storage can be used for Google docs and Gmail as well.

There are several desktop based solutions available to keep your online and off-line files in Sync for people who would like to use G-Docs as their online storage.

MemeoConnect is one such solution. This sync software for Google Docs will be available starting 18th of January. There is no the price yet but the software will be available for trial purpose for Mac and PC.

Internet storage – Online storage – Web backup – Online file backup, etc.. I bet you’ve been hearing at least one of these terms frequently, everyone who talks about data mobility, talks about web storage. Free online file storage services are becoming popular among users who want to have access to their data at all times no matter where.

Prices for hard disk drive are falling and the space is getting bigger than ever, what does this mean? It only goes to show that our storage needs are ever growing. In addition to huge storage space, most of us now want to access our data from anywhere in the world.

Online storage or internet storage services which were expensive at one point are not so expensive now and will get even more cheaper in the time to come. Most of the online services also offer a stripped down version of their services for free.

Let’s take a look at a few internet storage services:

Humyo.com – Web Storage: Humyo offers 30 GB space for free. In the free version of Humyo users have access to features like

Online File Access & Editing

Mobile Access

Send/E-mail Files

Publish & Embed Media, etc.

Paid version comes with all the services mentioned above +

Desktop Client

Encrypted File Transfers

Collaboration Features

Paid version costs $59 for the first year and $79 for the successive years. In free accounts if a user does not login for 90 days data will be deleted, in paid version data is never deleted.

Humyo interface is designed to be compatible with most of the phones, including iPhone. Humyo automatically detects the capabilities of the phone and starts streaming media from your online storage accordingly.

XDrive.com: Xdrive is one of the most popular services online. Xdrive services are offered by AOL. This Online backup service most of the features to its free users and offers 5 GB’s for online storage. Paid service comes with 50GB space and a personalized customer service including direct call-in, chat and e-mail support.

Paid service comes for $9.95 a month or $99.50 annually.

Xdrive offers a desktop client based on Adobe’s AIR technology. Quite frankly, this desktop client goes back to the stone age of technology. Other online services offer much advance and feature rich desktop clients.

Diino.com: I used Diino months ago just to try its services out and I was really impressed with what they had to offer. Diino offers an array of services right from Online backup’s to Mobile access, personal blog, etc.. The service also claims to be offer a secure storage solution with its secure servers.

Every registered user gets a personalized URL at Diino for example: example.dinnoweb.com which shows all the files you share publically and also hosts your blog.
Diino offers a unique feature called Webdrop which if activated; friends and family of the users can upload the files to the user’s account using a web interface.

Free online storage solution offers a desktop client for performing online backups which also lets you schedule online backups. Diino free account offers 2 simultaneous connections at a time and up to 10 connections at a time for a community plus account which costs $69.99 a month for 100 GB’s

Adrive.com: Adrive offers a free account for individuals with online storage of 50GB’s, impressive isn’t it? Now what’s not impressive is that the service does not allow more than one connection to the account at a time, it’s an individual account remember?!

Adrive also offers a backup client which runs in evaluation for 30 days after which the user needs to upgrade to continue to use it. Other features offered by Adrive are as follows:

ADrive Features

Cloud Storage

Upload & Store Files

Access Files Anywhere

Share Files

Edit Documents Online

Remote File Transfer

Desktop Backup Clien

Based on the features and the online storage space offered we recommend Diino.com or Humyo.com for taking online backups or uploading and sharing files.

We did not include other popular online storage services in this write up as their free version of online storage offered only 1GB or less space for storing files on the internet.

List of other Online Data backup Services:

Skydrive.Live.com

Box.net
