			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img height="86" border="0" align="right" width="205" alt="India's Number 1 Search engine Google" src="http://tnerd.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/no1-search.gif" /><a href="http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=2400" target="_blank">Comscore</a> recently released a <a href="http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=2400" target="_blank">study</a> for the  month of June specific to India. The study suggests that Indians on an average searched for  information only <strong>53 times</strong> in the month of June which slams India on 36th position out of 37 countries in the list. </p>
<p>It also states the fact that India represents <strong>15%</strong> of  world&rsquo;s population but when it comes to searching online we generate less than  <strong>2%</strong> searches performed worldwide.</p>

<ul>
<li><a href="http://rediff.com" target="_blank">Rediff</a> is India&rsquo;s <strong>Number 1 Local Search  engine</strong> with slightly less than 2% market share.</li>
<li><a href="http://google.com" target="_blank">Google</a> stood first with <strong>81% market  share</strong> and answered more than a billion searches in the month of June.</li>
</ul>
<p>  It is interesting and unfortunate to see that <a href="http://www.sequoiacap.com/company/guruji" target="_blank">SEQUOIA</a> backed local search  engine <a href="http://guruji.com" target="_blank">Guruji.com</a> does not make it to the list. <a href="http://www.sequoiacap.com/" target="_blank">SEQUOIA</a> invested $7 million in the local  search engine promoted by two IIT alumni.</p>
<p>With close to 50k users a month I am not too sure how long  will it take for <a href="http://guruji.com" target="_blank">Guruji</a> to show up on the &ldquo;Top Local  Search engine&rdquo; chart in India.</p>

<p>  Accuracy of the data from sources like <a href="http://comscore.com" target="_blank">Comscore</a> or <a href="http://compete.com" target="_blank">Compete</a> is a never ending debate that we will not  get into; we are simply going with the numbers that are available to us  publicly. </p>
