Although I am not a big fan of image search using the traditional search engines like Google and Yahoo, I can’t help but write about a new image search feature of Yahoo image search. But before that I should tell you that there are better ways of searching for images and my favorite are deviantart and flickr. Just because they have too much of user generated content rather than an algorithm trying to retrieve and index them, they are better than an indexing based search engine. Also, let’s face is there’s no smart search engine for images which is as efficient as search engines for texts based content. Multimedia is a tough nut to crack!

Anyways, the new feature that Yahoo image search has launched is called as Search Assist and is pretty smart in making your image search on yahoo a better experience. What it does is that it offers you related keywords for searching the image that you are looking for. Let’s say for example I am searching for Gentoo, now Yahoo’s Smart Assist, let’s me know related keywords which would better refine my search. The keywords that it offers for Gentoo are gentoo penguin, gentoo linux, gentoo logo etc. So it’s like a basic form of AI that’s been embedded in the image search of Yahoo.

This is a great feature and I am sure there will be lot of scope for improvement in coming days. You can check the official release here.
