Most of the e-mail services now a days are more or less the same and offer similar features to its users. So what makes them different and better than the rest. I think the best service is the one which uses the technology to talk to its users without making them read the help manuals or making them think what to do next?

I tried to register with leading e-mail services offered today to see how user friendly these services are. One thing that really stood out was simply the username suggestions by these services.

Services like Yahoo and Hotmail/Live lived up to the expectations at suggesting usernames but surprisingly Google got too geeky and suggested some mechanical names and AOL was too lazy to suggest anything

Here is a ground breaking idea for a Web 2.0 company, I am sure SEQUOIA will readily invest a Billion $’s. Here is the idea.. with the growing number of "wanna be" Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo e-mail services it will be nice to have a site where you enter a username and it shows which of the e-mail services has that username available and which does not. Isn’t it a great idea?

Following are the suggestions from different services.

Yahoo’s Suggestions for Usernames

Hotmail’s suggestions (Pretty good, I would select one from the list)

Gmail’s Robotic Suggestions:

AOL was too lazy to suggest anything:
