Norton Online Backup is a web service managed by the Symantec Corporation that lets you back up your computer’s data online in an interesting way.

Once you subscribe to an annual plan for data backup, you are allowed to back up upto five computers of your household onto the Norton’s data backup servers.

This is pretty impressive particularly if you consider how most of the online backup services confine a user to one computer, or two, in some cases.

The Norton Online Data Backup is an incredibly feature-rich web service that manages your data backup tasks with ease. Something that’s noticeable is that the latest version of Norton Online Backup allow 90-file versioning.

This means that once you’ve backed up a set of data and inevitably made undesirable changes to it, you can retrieve the earlier version of the files, and the time limit is 90 days, that’s about 3 months of time for your convenience.

The Norton Data Backup service users can also email any “backed-up file via download links sent through the redesigned web dashboard”. There is a feature called Advanced search which lets you hover or search over the desired data by file names, size and/or type of file.

The Norton Online Backup 2.0 comes with new features like cross-platform functionality for Windows and Mac computers, support for Intel-based Macs and a more intuitive redesign of the user interface.

Besides this, users can also store the file that’s currently being worked upon. That’s something what they call Open File Backup service and this is most useful when working with open emails.

The Norton Online Backup 2.0 is designed to be user friendly, intuitive and also performs automatic initial setup of the service once you are into it.

Unlike Windows Live Skydrive, Norton Online Backup doesn’t come free, at least not to the new users. However, existing users should be able to update to the version 2.0 as soon as it’s made available.

If you are interested in this online file backup service, you may try out the trial version for a period of 30 days.  If that’s impressive enough, the full version will cost you $50 for 25GB of storage space and allows up to five computers per account.

Microsoft Windows Live Skydrive is a web service which allows you to store backups of your data online. For 25 GB of password protected storage.

Step 1: To begin with, you’ll need to create a windows Live ID, click here to do so. If you already have one or once you have created an ID, just log in to your account.

Step 2 : Select a folder category listed on the screen or click on create to create a new folder.

Step 3: Once you have selected the folder, click on ‘Add Files‘ on the left side above the folders and browse for files, you want to upload. Remember, you can upload a max file size of up to 50MB per file.

Step 4: Click the Upload Button, when you are down specified the path of files to be uploaded on the web.

Step 5: Hurray, you are done! Repeat the process (step 3-4 only if you are logged in) to upload as many files you want and keep your data safe.

The Windows Live Skydrive not only allows you to backup up to 25GB of your important data online, but you can also access the data from the web, even when you are not home. Just log in to your Windows Live Skydrive account, select a folder and select the file to download.

You can even share your files or data with other people or restrict the visibility of your data to your ownself. Isn’t it just great, all the privacy you need and a complete data backup solution as just a few clicks? It’s amazing.

Karen’s Replicator is a free backup and synchronization utility which will backup files, directories, drives from one drive/folder to another, including network drives. It also does scheduled backups, without the need of you remembering to do a backup again!

For the purpose of this article I tried backing up a folder and it did what I was exactly looking for. Once you open the Application click on “New Job” as shown below.

Karen’s Replicator will allow you to choose the source and backup destinations as shown in the image.

Next you can click on the Change Schedule and set it as per your requirements or how and when you need the application to back your files up as shown below.

Karen’s replicator can be scheduled to run at a certain time each day or each hour or week or month (you can even go down to minute level). Typically the first backups takes a while, but after that it’s a quick process because the program only looks at files that have been changed.

Karen’s Replicator also gives you the option of setting up filters for the type of files that you do NOT want to back up. For example, shortcuts (.lnk ) or temp (.tmp) files. You can set these rules per folder or across the board.

The program is set by default to copy changed files (will compare sizes and dates of last modification), but you could easily change these settings for each folder/group of folders if you want to.
Global Exclusion is another feature of the program which allows you to skip the entire drives, folders, or specific files while replicating.

Karen’s Replicator will not backup your files online to an FTP nor is it a zip backup utility.
