I received an invitation today, haven’t had a chance to go through the application yet but I am sure lot of great minds have achieved their creative highs while putting the application together. icloud is an XML based online OS, one of the first few ones to make it out in the open.

Like I said I ‘didn’t use the application much yet, but I will. In the meanwhile start leaving comments for receiving invitations. As of now I see limited invitations but I might get more, so start leaving comments asking for invitations and you will get one soon.

I will update this post soon with my opinion off Xcerion or icloud. I love applications in the cloud!

The whole world, from IBM to Google, Yahoo & Microsoft every tech company and anyone who is remotely related to technology talks about “Cloud Computing”, “The Web OS”, “Cloud Applications” and what not!

Why do technology companies encourage users to use the web OS? Is it just to put all your data on the web or to make the PC OS meaningless? I say if there is so much effort put in to create an online web OS then there should be effort put into creating applications which will help users to get online without using OS such as Windows, Linux, etc…

Such efforts will keep the hardware requirement to the minimum and bring the cost of owning a computer down thus increasing the internet penetration in developing and underdeveloped countries.

Following are the list of things we should have to make it possible

DOS based applications which are capable of working with most of the hardware accessories like mouse, keyboard, printer, webcam, etc… treating them as plug n play devices.

DOS based web browser which works as the IE, FireFox or Opera. Plays movies, flash, images, etc..

I think evolution of technology does not mean compromising on features but the real meaning of evolution is taking the technology to the next level by offering mind blowing and out of the box features and reducing the cost of owning the technology at the same time.

This is one site which offers a list of very interesting DOS based programmes. http://www.opus.co.tt/dave/indexall.htm

This list has everything from MP3 player (screenshot) to 2D CAD (screenshot) program or a DivX player to using ICQ & IRC.

What do you think, Will Windows every go away?

More and more companies and universities are getting involved in newly emerging cloud computing model. Google & IBM announced a multi million dollar collaborative research project based on Cloud Computing with universities. Microsoft and Sun Microsystems have also been promoting and researching on Cloud computing since a long time.

What is Cloud computing?
A research paper released on October 8th, 2007 by Greg Boss, Padma Malladi, Dennis Quan, Linda Legregni, Harold Hall from IBM states

“Cloud computing is a term used to describe both a platform and type of application. A cloud
computing platform dynamically provisions, configures, reconfigures, and deprovisions servers as
needed. Servers in the cloud can be physical machines or virtual machines. Advanced clouds
typically include other computing resources such as storage area networks (SANs), network
equipment, firewall and other security devices.

Cloud computing also describes applications that are extended to be accessible through the
Internet. These cloud applications use large data centers and powerful servers that host Web
applications and Web services. Anyone with a suitable Internet connection and a standard
browser can access a cloud application.”

Click here to read the paper from IBM on Cloud Computing

Xcerion is one of the companies which is expected to change the face of the game. Xcerion believes in making softwares available for free the most interesting part of this company is their browser based OS called XIOS.

One of the reasons companies are aggressively working and building the cloud computing model is 1) Better accessibility 2) Better resource management 3) Reduced cost of infrastructure 4) Improved performance, etc..

Following is a lit of 10 Web based browser based OS

Craythur (http://www.craythur.com/)

Desktoptwo (http://desktoptwo.com/)

EyeOS (http://eyeos.org/)

Glide (http://www.glidedigital.com/)

Goowy (http://www.goowy.com/)

Orca (http://www.orcaa.com/)

Purefect (http://purefect.klorofil.org/demo/)

SSOE (http://giffard.dynalias.net/ssoe/)

XinDESK (http://www.xindesk.com/)

YouOS (https://www.youos.com/)

If that was not enough, Rich Skrenta wrote an article back in 2004 predicting that Google will eventually come up with its own version of Web OS, lets wait and watch.
