KDE or the K Desktop Environment, is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fulfill the need for an easy to use desktop for UNIX workstations, similar to desktop environments found on Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Now that you have some idea we are going to see how to install KDE 4.2 beta on Ubuntu. I have tested and installed it on Ubuntu 8.10 or Intrepid Ibex, but I am sure it won’t be rocket science for installing it on previous versions of Ubuntu.

Note: This version of KDE is still in beta and can be buggy. It’s advised to only use it for testing purposes. The final release is expected in January next year.

Installation

Before you can install KDE 4.2 beta you’ll have to add the repository to the software sources.

1. Go to System->Administration->Software Sources

2. Go to the tab Third-Party Software and click Add. Add the following line

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu intrepid main

3. Next open a terminal window and type the following command

To solve this there’s a software called as FLV Extract. Good part is that neither quality of audio nor the video is compromised when you are using FLV Extract. All you have to do is to drop the downloaded FLV file on to the software.

I think it should support downloading of FLV files as well so that it becomes a complete package. The song that you extract will show a different duration than they are once you play them in your audio player. But actually the songs are complete without any problem.

There are various ways of doing this and is specific to each of the browser, but today we are going to look at an application called as Cleano. Cleano is an application which helps you clean your temporary data on login. It can clean:

I hope you have fun using Norton anti-virus for free and by the time you are finished using it, you’ll have other releases form Norton to try. Because these are OEM versions you won’t need to activate them and hence you are getting them for free with full updates!

But you can still get a feel of ribbon feature for most of the applications. Sometime back we did a post on Notepad 2008 which could be safely used to replace your notepad in vista and xp. Today we are going to see a similar application which can safely replace your wordpad in Windows Vista and Windows XP. Best of all you can get the feel of ribbon feature.

Please note that this is not an original wordpad from Widows 7. The utility is called as wordpad 2009 and is developed by Solo-Dev. The only bug that I came across is when you insert a large image you don’t get horizontal scroll bar and hence cannot see the image properly. Other than that it’s a pretty good software to try your hands on.

You also have tab feature where in you can work on multiple wordpad sheets simultaneously. Other features are:

Anyways, the new feature that Yahoo image search has launched is called as Search Assist and is pretty smart in making your image search on yahoo a better experience. What it does is that it offers you related keywords for searching the image that you are looking for. Let’s say for example I am searching for Gentoo, now Yahoo’s Smart Assist, let’s me know related keywords which would better refine my search. The keywords that it offers for Gentoo are gentoo penguin, gentoo linux, gentoo logo etc. So it’s like a basic form of AI that’s been embedded in the image search of Yahoo.

This is a great feature and I am sure there will be lot of scope for improvement in coming days. You can check the official release here.

Good news is even if you are not those lucky guys who officially got the invite to test the Windows Vista SP2 beta, you can still get it. What better place to find it than P2P sites.
