The recent update of WebOS 1.2.0 did not offer any new features to its users but did fix a list of bugs and several tweaks for optimized performance.

The tweaks and updates are related to Music, App Catalog, Bluetooth, Calendar, E-mail, Contacts, Media, etc… as you can see almost all aspects of the OS have been touched.

The webOS team is paying close attention to the the feedback received from the community and fixing the bugs quite promptly. Since its launch in June, Palm, has released 5 WebOS update which means a new update at a distance of about 20 days each.

Here is a list of important updates WebOS 1.2.0 offers..

Music from Amazon’s MP3 can now be purchased over your phone network and you do not need a WiFi connection.

The much awaited App Catalog is ready and now by entering your credit card information you can purchase apps. Also the Credit Card info would be stored on the Palm profile and not your phone. You can also download and re-install the application you used earlier for free from App Catalog without paying anything. You can share app information via email or text message with one button.

Contact transfers via Bluetooth has now been increased and it does notify and ask if you would like to transfer the call to the car kit instead of the call getting transferred automatically which used to happen earlier.

Several improvements made to the calendar such as changing the view, color, option of tapping the number and dialing it if the calendar note contains the phone number. By tapping snooze on a calendar event notification it no longer appears after the event and time.

Send and Receive vCards as an attachment to an email or MMS.

Provides the option to search for messages in any email folder and also lets you act upon images and send them again as attachments. Also gives you the option to copy the image to the Photo apps if JPG, BMP or PNG format. Formatting is maintained when trying to forward a message. Meeting invitation responses are sent correctly and support for paragraph text selection also available and much more..

If an audio file is paused or interrupted, playback resumes from the point you paused it.

Downloading files is supported in the browser now. You can also accept self signed certificates through the browser. Backing up and restoring of web browser bookmarks and lot more.

Almost all of us at some point have deleted stuff that we later realized was important. This includes deleting of files, emails, videos, photos, audios, etc. and trust me deleting something that was so important can be painful and especially if any of the deleted files served as memories then it becomes even tougher!

Well, here is software that will give you a second chance! A second chance to recover the files that were mistakenly deleted from the PC. The software is rightly called “Search and Recover” and comes from the makers of System Mechanics, iolo Technologies. (Click here to get Free Keys for Search & Recover)

iolo’s Search & Recover 5 is a data recovery software for Windows Operating system. It has the ability to recover, rescue, quickly locate and save the precious data which is lost. An easy to use interface allows the users to sort through the irrelevant files and select the ones which should be recovered.

The software gives you different options of recovering the data such as Pictures & Movies, Songs & Sounds, Emails, Deleted Files or you can perform a Total Recovery as shown below in the screenshot.

It also has a few Advanced Disk tools as shown above in the screenshot.

Make a Copy of a Drive or Disk

Create a Virtual Drive

Manage Drive Images

Search for Lost or Damaged Partitions

Recently I deleted a few pictures that were on my digital camera’s data card and later realized I had not backed them up. The following screenshots will run you through the process of recovering files from the camera.

Once you click on Start button next to Pictures and Movies option you will be taken to a new window where you can select the source, I have selected Camera as shown below in the screenshot.

Once you have selected the source you need to click on Next and it moves to the next Tab i.e. Select Camera which I have done below.

Click on the desired option and then click on Next again and it takes you to the next Tab i.e. Select Options.

I selected both the options i.e. Use SmartScan and also Perform sector-level search using StrongScan. You can select either one based on your needs. If you select SmartScan, the technology it uses eliminates irrelevant and junk files from the search, making it faster and easier for you to find the files you need.

If you select the second option i.e. StrongScan it even finds the files that were lost because its parent disk was formatted or corrupted. With StrongScan you can perform a deeper scan to find and reassemble data. Time taken to scan using StrongScan is significantly higher when compared to SmartScan.

Once you click on the Next button it starts the search and displays the result accordingly as shown below.

Once recovered point to a folder, device, CD DVD or drive to save all deleted data.

Some of the features of iolo Search & Recover are as mentioned below.

Recovers lost data from all kind of digital media and devices i.e. Cameras, Music Players, CD’s, DVD’s, memory cards, flash drives and much more.

Recovers lost data from all kind of drive types i.e. IDE, SCSI, USB 2.0 and much more.

Recovers from all kind of popular mails. Has the ability to recover deleted tasks, notes, journals, contacts and much more from Microsoft Outlook.

Also has the ability to recover data from Malfunctioning, damaged, formatted and even repartitioned drives and disks.

Uses Smart technology.

Recover data to CD or DVD.

Secure file deletion which permanently erases the data from your PC or device ensuring no data recovery software can find it anymore.

Avoid future data loss by creating mirror copies of the entire drive.

Creates virtual drives to run CD or DVD content on faster hard drive speeds.

iolo Search and Recover 5 originally costs $39.95 for a 12-month subscription. As part of promotional offer, it is at $19.95 however, folks at iolo were kind enough to share a few free licenses with TNerd readers.

Each of the licenses that we are giving away is valid for 1 year and can be installed on 3 PC’s.

I usually take data backups on-line to recover data in case computer crashes but I have been looking for a free utility that can back my data up on regular basis without me remembering or reminding it. I found Karen’s Replicator as a solution to my need of a free back up utility.

Karen’s Replicator is a free backup and synchronization utility which will backup files, directories, drives from one drive/folder to another, including network drives. It also does scheduled backups, without the need of you remembering to do a backup again!

Here’s what you need to know about Karen’s Replicator and how you should be able to use it once you have installed it. (Click here to download)

For the purpose of this article I tried backing up a folder and it did what I was exactly looking for. Once you open the Application click on “New Job” as shown below.

Karen’s Replicator will allow you to choose the source and backup destinations as shown in the image.

Next you can click on the Change Schedule and set it as per your requirements or how and when you need the application to back your files up as shown below.

Karen’s replicator can be scheduled to run at a certain time each day or each hour or week or month (you can even go down to minute level). Typically the first backups takes a while, but after that it’s a quick process because the program only looks at files that have been changed.

Karen’s Replicator also gives you the option of setting up filters for the type of files that you do NOT want to back up. For example, shortcuts (.lnk ) or temp (.tmp) files. You can set these rules per folder or across the board.

The program is set by default to copy changed files (will compare sizes and dates of last modification), but you could easily change these settings for each folder/group of folders if you want to.
Global Exclusion is another feature of the program which allows you to skip the entire drives, folders, or specific files while replicating.

Karen’s Replicator will not backup your files online to an FTP nor is it a zip backup utility.

I’ve been looking for a good free backup utility for some time now, and I have definitely found it. I highly recommend this program. Click here to download.

Communication has become an essential part of our lives and sharing information and memories in terms of images, videos, documents, etc.. makes a major chunk of it.

There are times when I want to share a video but I don’t want to upload it to the sites like Youtube, etc.. I just like to keep it personal and one on one. However, sending files as huge as 100MB or more is not possible using your regular email service or an IM client.

This is where Pando comes to rescue (Click here to Download). Pando is free P2P software that enables the user to share large files over the internet easily. You can share the files through an email, IM or the WEB option it provides as shown below. For the purpose of this article I have chosen email.

Once you have selected the desired option a window opens where you can drag and drop files that need to be shared with others. I am sending a video file which I just dragged and dropped (or you can stick to the traditional method of browsing and selecting a file on your hard drive to be shared) on the Pando as seen in the image below.

You would need to fill the email address of the person whom, you are sending the file to and your email would be show at the bottom as shown in the image above.

Once all the required details are filled and the file is ready to be shared click on “Send” and you would see a window appear which shows the progress of the particular file(s) being sent.

It connects and sends the file to the email address we had entered initially. Does that mean it sends the entire video through an email? No, that is not what Pando does.

Pando uploads the file to its own servers and notifies the receiver of the same. The receiver can download the file using the Pando software. Users can send a file as huge as 1GB which stays on the Pando servers for 7 days after which it’s deleted.

The best thing I like about Pando is anyone can leave a file for you when you are offline and you can download the same whenever you go online.

Another interesting feature Pando offers is called "Channels". Using this feature you can download video content from popular sites like Discovery, Comedy Central, NBA.com, NAT GEO, etc.. Click here to see the complete list..

If you like what you see you can instantly share it with your friends and family. So, using Pando is not all work it’s fun too!

There have been times when we spend considerable amount of time on an online form, writing an email or editing content only to realize that the information filled has been lost.

The reason could be server timeouts, network issues, browser crashes, power failures, loosing connectivity and so on. In a situation like this we try retrieving the information but most often than not the back button, refresh, etc.. nothing seem to work. This is were a smart Firefox Plugin comes to rescue.

Lazarus is a simple solution to an annoying problem. It’s a free Firefox Add-on which makes a back-up of the data we spend hours in filling and have lost it for some reason. It stores this data and makes it available whenever required, if you need to re-fill a from.

Lazarus’s smart functionality certainly makes it one of the Best Firefox Extensions available out there..

Let’s have a look at how Lazarus works. It saves the data automatically when we are typing into the form and also saves the form when you hit the submit button.

If you’ve lost the information on the form and want to recover it, just go back to the same page, right-click in one of the fields in the form and select "Recover form" from the menu as shown below.

Forms can be saved in 2 different ways as mentioned below.

(A): Autosave: Saves the form while you are entering data into it.

(S): Submitted: The form was saved just before you submitted it to the server.

Lazarus saves all the form information inside a SQLite database ("lazarus.sqlite") located in your profile folder. This data is encrypted to ensure your privacy is protected.

By default your form information is kept indefinitely, but if you’re concerned about security you can have it removed after a specified time.

Lazarus works on *almost* all web forms and will save you from a lot of different server, browser, and connection problems that might cause you to lose your work. Two types of forms that Lazarus does not handle yet, 1) Richtext/WYSIYG text editors (eg TinyMCE), and 2) Dymamic (AJAX) forms, which function in different ways to ordinary webforms and are harder to capture. The new beta of Lazarus, soon to be released, handles those obscure types of "form" as well.

Click here to download Lazarus for Firefox

Have you ever tried to delete any of the files on your machine only to see the following error messages or alerts?

Cannot delete file: Access is denied

There has been a sharing violation.

The source or destination file may be in use.

The file is in use by another program or user.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

I have come across these annoying messages myself only to realize that I cannot delete the file or a folder in question unless I restart the machine or end certain tasks from the "Windows Task Manager".

Unlocker is a free utility that helps you get rid of the above mentioned messages when you are trying to delete, move or rename any file or folder.

Let’s see how Unlocker works.

Once the Unlocker is downloaded and installed (click here to download unlocker), every time an error pops up which won’t let you delete/rename/move/copy a file, right-click on the file and click on "Unlocker" from the context menu to unlock the file. See the image below.

This opens the utility window and lets you choose from the options as shown below.

Once the desired option is selected, it starts performing the activity and shows the result. If the file or a folder is locked i.e. in use by any other program or process then you will see a similar window as shown below.

You can either select the option from the drop down or click on Unlock All or the selected file and perform the desired action.

There are several other programs that are available on the internet which have the same functionality and pretty much do the same however we found Unlocker better among all of them.

To download Unlocker click here.

The Blogosphere has been reporting that there is a new virus attack that is creating havoc on Twitter.

The Twitter service has been infected by a worm which is redirecting its users to StalkDaily.com. The virus has been sending auto-tweets such as "Hey everyone, join StalkDaily.com", It’s a site like Twitter but with pictures, videos and so much more."

For now please do not visit the site StalkDaily and if you have still not been infected do not click on any link related to StalkDaily.

Twitter’s spam watching account had updated this morning that it is aware of the issue and is currently working on it.

If you have already been infected it is suggested to follow some basic steps as mentioned on Twittercism who first reported the issue.

In your browser, clear your cache and empty all of your cookies. (This can be found in your settings.)

Log out of TweetDeck or any external applications you are using.

On Twitter.com, change your password.

Log back in. It should be okay. If so, log back into TweetDeck et al.

Go back and delete any tweets sent by you recommending StalkDaily. This is important.

Report @stalkdaily in a tweet to Twitter’s @spam account as follows: @spam @stalkdaily

TechCrunch also reported that there is an update on StalkDaily.com as mentioned below, however please do not visit the site.

[Update]

Twitter claims that the issue is resolved now and the exploit has been fixed now. Virus apprently was taking advantage of the option where users can execute code in the "Bio" section of the profile.

Message from the StalkDaily guy…

Split Browser is a free Firefox Add-on which helps you in splitting the content area of the browser into as many windows as you would like. This allows you to see more information in one go!

It is useful in situation where you would like to surf the internet in one window and be able to use the other part of the screen for a web mail service or a web app or compare 2 web-pages side by side or leave one Web page open and viewable while you are browsing other websites.

Yes you can definitely toggle between two browser tabs or even 2 browser windows while comparing 2 web pages or achieving different results however I can say Split Browser is definitely more streamlined and does work wonders.

To use Split Browser, you’ll need to have at least two browser tabs open. Once the add-on is installed to your Firefox browser it adds a new option to the Firefox menu called as "Split" as shown below.

To split your browser window into two, you would need to click on "Split Current Tab to" and select the position of the panes i.e. Above, Right, Left or below. By doing this your two tabs are now merged into one, with the screen split between the two of them as shown below.

There is no Limitation to the number of windows you can open inside your window or you can say Split Browser does give you the option of splitting your Firefox window as many times as your systems memory can support.

Few days back we wrote about Usernamecheck.com which went down and the developer had mentioned that the site was a pet project which was developed over the weekend and he did not have the time or the interest to keep it running.

The webmaster had encouraged its users to create a similar site and had also left a link explaining how the entire functionality can be brought to life.

The entire idea was amazing and great for people who wanted to know if the desired or the branded unique username is available across all social media sites. With Usernamecheck.com closed and now the domain also sold we were waiting eagerly to see who will bring this to life…

We might be a little late to release this news to our readers however there is a site out there which does the same or has started doing the same when it got launched on the 01ST of Apr ’09. With the domain name Usernamecheck.com sold, the site was launched by the name – Namechk.com.

It pretty much does the same and carries the same functionality as Usernamecheck.com however promises to build on the same concept and introduce some features such as user-submitted recommendations for new social sites and a tool that will actually register at all available sites for you.

I did test a few names on Namechk and I can say it is fast, it actually returned results from close to 100 social networking sites within no time.
