It was a 2-2 draw in a closely fought game but the deciding shootout ended in a glorious victory for Chelsea over their rivals and European champions, Barcelona at the pre-season International Champions Cup match in US on Tuesday.
The first half of the actual game saw a beautiful opening goal by Eden Hazard of Chelsea 10 minutes into the opening of the game while the second half was dominated by Barcelona with two goals from Luis Suarez and Sandro Ramirez before the scores were levelled by a goal from Gary Cahill (Chelsea) at the 86th minute leading to a penalty shootout. Even Lionel Messi and Neymar from Barca could not change the tide.
With the entire stadium alternatively cheering and holding their collective breath, the shootout commenced and ended with Chelsea converting all four of their spot-kicks from Radamel Falcao, Victor Moses, Ramires and Loic Remy even as Barca fumbled with misses from Alen Halilovic and Gerard Pique.
Later, in an interview Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said, “For a preparation match it was fantastic for us. It was a good pre-season game for us, I think (for) both teams and also for the public. You know, it’s a friendly, but when Barcelona face Chelsea, you want to win, it’s not a friendly.”
Barcelona will defend their La Liga title on Aug 23 while Chelsea will face Arsenal at the Premier League opener game, the Community Shield, on Sunday August 8.
