Samsung’s rivalry with Apple is set to heat up once more as it prepares to launch its newest flagship device – the Galaxy Tab S2 – sometime in August.
The new tablet will come in 8-inch and 9.7-inch models in two colour variants – black and white. While the 265 grams 8-inch tab will be a Wi-Fi only model, the 389 grams 9.7 inch Tab S2 will offer both Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity options. According to JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics, “The Galaxy Tab S2 is not only our thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever, it also gives users quick, easy access to a wealth of superior viewing and productivity features.”
Both models will be a mere 5.6mm, making it one of the company’s slimmest tablets so far. The Tab S2 will come with Android Lollipop 5.0 out of the box overlaid with TouchWiz UI, 3GB RAM and either 32GB or 64GB storage expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. Both tablets are integrated with an octa-core chip at 1.9Ghz/1.3Ghz with a strong possibility of the Exynos 5433 processor. This however has not been confirmed. Even the battery is said to be somewhere around 5,870 mAh/4,000 mAh for powerful backup and standby. Connectivity offerings include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Direct, GPS, Bluetooth 4.1 BLE and GLONAAS.
As per an official statement from the company, “they have recreated the same viewing experience of browsing through traditional print media,” with a super AMOLED 2,048 x 1,536 display that will also allow users to simultaneously view and run two apps (think Apple iOS 9’s Dual-View). The display resembles an iPad in terms of its (4 x 4) aspect ratio format and will enhance reading and viewing experience for e-books and web pages. The screen comes with a new reading mode, which, according to Samsung, “modifies the screen’s brightness level to help users read content for longer periods of time.” A built-in fingerprint scanner, an 8MP rear and 2.1MP front-facing camera rounds off the specs for now.
