DeAndre Jordan Back with Clippers, Drops Mavericks

DeAndre Jordan Back with Clippers, Drops Mavericks

The Los Angeles Clippers are rejoicing! They have got back their ace centre DeAndre Jordon who, at the last minute went back on his verbal agreement from the Dallas Mavericks, choosing instead to return to the Clippers in a four-year, $87 million deal. A 6-foot-11 center, Jordan had played the last seven seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers but had suddenly made a verbal deal with the Dallas Mavericks for four years and $80 million.

DeAndre Jordan’s unexpected decision and signing, possibly after regretting his promise to the Mavericks, came post the lifting of the NBA’s free agency moratorium at 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday as celebrations at Jordan’s Houston home spilled into the night with a group from the Clippers descending on him, including Coach Doc Rivers, Pierce, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and J. J. Redick. The team announced their triumph on twitter saying, “WE’RE OFFICIALLY CENTERED,” and, “#WelcomeHomeDJ.” They even tweeted pictures of a chair pushed against a door and a tent in the backyard to show that they were serious about not letting the Mavericks steal him from under their noses!

However the fact remains that Jordan, as a free agent, reneged on his verbal promise and this could have other wide-ranging effects. The Mavericks did not even get a warning. The Clippers, though, are as happy as can be, Jordan is an ace on the team and his return will give them a shot at the N.B.A. championship. Last season, he had led the league in rebounds 11.5 points and 15 rebounds and field-goal percentage (71 percent).  The team desperately needs his talent; after all, they do not want to face another 34-year stretch with only three winning seasons!

So with Jordan safely ensconced within the team, the Clippers probably get the last laugh.
