OnePlus 2 to be Price Under $450

In a welcome announcement, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has announced via Twitter that the new OnePlus 2 smartphone will be priced under $450. The announcement came via a Twitter post followed by a teaser where he said, “Honestly, it’s never been about the price. We simply make the best smartphones we can, and we go from there.”

Set for a July 27 launch, it was initially speculated that the device would be priced more than $350 given the earlier OnePlus One’s base price of $249 and 64GB variant’s price of $299 (after the price cut last month). While $450 is still more than the existing prices, given the phone’s hardware and specifications, it might not be too unreasonable.

Recent reports about the body of the phone have hinted at a metallic build with glass panels while the company itself has confirmed the following features:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 SoC processor
  • USB Type-C port
  • Fingerprint sensor (expected to be superior to Apple’s Touch ID)
  • Dual camera

Other recent reports/leaks and teasers spoke of the following tech specs:

  • 5 inch (1080 x 1920 p) LTPS LCD capacitive touchscreen screen
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 4
  • Android OS, v5.1 (Lollipop) overlaid with CyanogenMod UI
  • 16/64GB storage
  • 4GB RAM
  • 16MP rear and 5MP front camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 1, DLNA, hotspot, NFC
  • MicroSIM capability
  • 3300 mAh battery

Keep in mind though that all these rumours and speculations will only be confirmed once the device is unveiled on July 27. The device launch will share a platform with OnePlus’ flagship customized “cardboard” VR (virtual reality) headsets launch and the event will be streamed live across the world as the “first product launch in VR”.
