The modern world of today have more smartphone users than ever, and so are the number of smartphones.

Picking up a bunch of top 5 smartphones would be a little difficult but not when you have a research-based report for assistance.

A well known organization called NDP Group has revealed the top 5 smartphones in US for the third quarter, and as you expect, it packs Apple’s iPhone. Actually, iPhones – there are two of them.

The first two spots are claimed by iPhones — iPhone 4 and (surprisingly) the relatively older iPhone 3GS too! — while the other top 3 feature Android phones. Apple’s iPhone has been magically dominating the smartphone markets, particularly in US, but not without some decent competition from these Google Android phones.

Here’s the list of Top 5 smartphones of 2011 for the third quarter:

  1. iPhone 4 (Apple)
  2. iPhone 3GS (Apple)
  3. EVO 4G (HTC)
  4. Droid 3 (Motorola)
  5. Intensity II (Samsung)

As mentioned, the first two spots belong to Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS respectively followed by the wonderful Evo, the 4G debutant on HTC , Motorola Droid 3 and Samsung Intensity II.

That sure is for a quarter that has already passed. Now, with the launch of the “most amazing iPhone” that includes the game-changing Siri feature, Apple is all set to bag another top spot in the next year’s list but not without some decent competition from Google.

The company’s Android OS has penetrated a massive amount of mobile device on the planet. Google is working to live up to the iOS competition and that change should be more obvious with the release of the Android ICS 4.0 OS for common masses.

By the way, there’s also a list of top 5 smartphone accessories brands listed below. It may not include some of your favorites, but you can certainly let us know them in the comments  below.

  1. Zagg
  2. Otter Products
  3. Just Wireless
  4. Motorola
