A year after Skype and Nokia entered into a partnership, Skype has announced free Skype for Nokia mobile phones. Skype for Nokia will offer almost the same set of services that the Skype desktop client does.

The company has been experimenting with the free Skype client for about a year and now, finally the Nokia skype versions are available for download.

However, Skype for Nokia is limited to work with a limited range of handsets including a few top-of-the-line handsets from both touchscreen and non-touchscreen sectors.

Nokia’s touchscreen phones that support Skype include Nokia n97, N97 Mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and Nokia 5530 while the rest of list is comprised of Nokia E72, E71, E90, E63, E66, E51, N96, N95, N95 8GB, N85, N82, N81, N81 8GB, N79, N78, Nokia 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator and Nokia 5320.

With Nokia Skype client, Nokia users can now make free voice calls with their mobile phones over 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows user with internet-enabled data plans to save money by using VoIP instead of using regular carrier calls.

Nokia Skype client also allows you to share pictures, send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups, make free Skype-to-skype calls, share videos, files and even receive calls from an online number from a user who is online and available in your list of associates.

Reportedly, Skype had plans to launch this service for mobile phones way back in 2005, but then network carriers considered Skype’s VoIP services as a threat to their sustenance and so they called off.

As most of the networks are progressing to transform into all-data networks that provide both basic telephony services as well as high speed internet access, Skype could manage hit the shot not ahead of time and so VoIP is righteously entertained.
