Apple Lifts Restrictions on VOIP over 3G. iCall becomes the First App to Take Advantage!
Apple let its guards down with the restrictions on VOIP calls on the 3G network. This essentially means that iPhone users will be able to make free VOIP calls using applications available on the App Store.
While that happens let’s take a look at the first ever iPhone application that lets users take advantage of the latest changes.
iCall reacted quickly and released their version of App which enables FREE VOIP calls on AT&T’s 3G network. Click here to download the app from iTunes.
The app does not score great review from its users who use this application to make cheap international calls, however, I’ve used this app to make local calls over AT&T’s 3G network and it works pretty well. So for a local free VOIP solution, I give it a 5 star, for international calls I have Vonage world plan
With this new change we will start seeing more and more application offering similar service. I can’t wait for Skype to come out with a version that makes and receives calls over 3G.
This leaves Apple with one less reason to keep Google’s voice application on hold.
Here are few screenshots from iCall App on iPhone. Click here to download the application from iTunes.

Notice “3G” on the screen shots you see above. The call is being made on the AT&T’s 3G network! Looks like AT&T is having to give up a lot to keep Apple from making iPhones available on other networks.
