MagicJack FemtoCell: How About a MagicJack for Your Mobile Phone?
MagicJack when launched sounded too good to be true but once I got my hands on it, it worked just as advertised and offered calls to US and Canada for a fee of $20 a year. People call it free calling but I don’t, I am paying $20 for it
If you thought that’s all MagicJack offers to reduce your home phone bills, here this. MagicJack will soon release its own femtocell gadget to reduce your mobile bills as well.
MagicJacks Femtocell is a technology which receives signals from your mobile phone and send them through the internet to get you connected to the number you are calling. This is no different from a regular mobile phone tower which sends and receives signals from a regular mobile phone to make calls.
Watch the following video to see Femtocell in action.
As you so in the video it is still in its early working prototype stage so expect some waiting time before you get your hands on it. Another issue that can influence the wait time as the industry analysts foresee is the legal battle with the telecom companies because the femtocell uses the radio frequencies to connect a mobile phone and these frequencies are owned by the giant telecom companies.
Dan Borislow, Founder of MagicJack does not see this as a problem at all as he argues that the users own the radio signals at home and they are legally allowed to do whatever they want to do at home.
Maybe that’s right but the telecom giants will not let an already 5 million subscriber service to eat into their radio signals without a bloody fight.
Dan also claims the new gadget to be the smallest and cheapest use of femtocell technology anyone has ever made. Regular femtocell gadgets are available between $150 and $300 and the one from the MagicJack is expected to be priced under $100.
The gadget is said to work flawlessly within 3000sqft area of the house however the area can be adjusted using the software that comes with femtocell.
MagicJack is also expected to release a version which does not require a computer to run and make calls. You can simply hook it up with the internet connection just like you do with Vonage and it will start working.
What do you think? Will you buy one of these?

I would seriously consider buying this TODAY, as I've been waiting for over a year for my cellular carrier to roll out their fentocell offer.
However, a limitation I see is (I suspect) the Magic Jack femtocell may only work for outgoing calls, as it is unclear how inbound calls to your cell number can be "intercepted" and redirected to the magic jack while in your home.
Will you have to start using the Magic Jack number as your "new" cell number? And what happens when you leave your house? How will incoming calls to your Magic Jack number get to your cell?

Hey Good Guy
Well here is how it works...
As soon as you get home or within the range femtocell covers the gadget pairs with your phone by sending a code. Once paired you can make calls from your mobile phone, however, the number used will be the one on MagicJack not your mobile number.
So you can receive (I am assuming) calls only the ones that are made to the MagicJack number and as soon as you leave the house you can use your mobile as just another mobile phone.
This is still a prototype I am sure we will see a lot of changes by the time it hits the market!
