Microsoft Fights Child Pornography with PhotoDNA – Call for Action 16th & 17th Dec
Microsoft just launched MicrosoftPhotoDNA.com which marks the importance of fighting against Child Pornography as an individual, society or a company in whatever shape or form.
Microsoft is known for its efforts with Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS) to help control the ever growing issue of Child Pornography. Microsoft works with the governments around the world to implement CETS and help catch the criminals of child pornography.
The latest Technology Microsoft is introducing to curb the redistribution of identified and known child pornographic material is called PhotoDNA. This technology does not identify new images as pornographic material but it scans billions of images to match them against the ones that are identified as objectionable material in the past.
The technology does this by hashing every image, which acts as a digital signature or the digital fingerprint of the file. These digital signatures are then matched with the existing ones in the database and if matched, it alerts the authority and the picture is taken off the internet.
Watch the following videos from MicrosoftResearch to understand how this technology really works.
Microsoft also requests us to help spread the word by changing our profile images or logos on Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live, MySpace, Instant Messenger or any other online profile with the PhotoDNA campaign logo. Call for action dates Dec 16th and 17th.
