Before you start reading, you should know I’ve never created any music, never took any classes at school or otherwise and cords to me look no different from an ancient Chinese script. With my musical background out of the way we are all set for what’s coming next.

IK Multimedia recently launched iPhone applications that let you create your own groove, effortlessly! You don’t have to be a genius to create impressive mixes using any of the GrooveMaker packages, House, Hip-Hop and Club. These applications range from $4.99 to $9.99. The one I used for this review was GrooveMaker Hip-Hop. This application comes loaded with 4 songs, 80-85-90-100 BMP, 315 loops, etc. That’s some serious stuff to create impressive grooves.

Once you download and launch the application hit the HELP to learn how to use this application in detail, I highly recommend it. The interactive wizard quickly runs you through the process of creating music and explains all the features.

I did not expect an iPhone application to be so detailed and advanced which creates high quality grooves on the fly. Users just have to select a song and drag & drop mixes from a huge selection of Loops, Bass, Line, Pad, Fx, etc. to create good music.

If you are a first timer not knowing where to start just select a song and choose from the existing mixes to customize them to make them your own. For the first few grooves try and use as many features as you can, for example adjust the tempo, mute or solo from the Track option, PAN to switch between speakers, etc..

Once you like what you created move to the SEQUENCE screen arrange your groove and save it or export it in WMA format.

Though this is a great application I think the following features will make it even better…

Users should be able to add their own music from the computer or the phone itself.
Loops cannot be sliced further, should have that option
Few frequently used options like “Save” should be made more visible
Users should have the option of exporting the music file in formats other than .WAV
