Bluetooth Alarm? Wondering  what does that mean? Is it stuff like an alarm clock with Bluetooth support or an alarm system that can be operated using a Bluetooth device?

Even more, is it something simply weird that one could hardly approximate from its name? Such numerous thoughts started nesting in my head before I learned that it is actually meant to help people like us from losing our gadgets (carkeys, flash drives, mobile phones and laptops).

Nio BluetoothNio, the Bluetooth-based alarm is a thumbdrive-sized electronic tag that attaches with your device and sends out a warning alarm when you are out of range from your Bluetooth device, be it your mobile phone or the laptop.

This gadget guardian, designed by a firm in Edinburgh, creatively uses Bluetooth technology to create an ‘invisible wire’ (a security zone) between the Nio and your device and when this wire is broken, an alarm is triggered.

If you step out of range from your paired device,  both the Nio  and the paired device(your laptop or mobile phone) shrill to alert you; either with a police siren, a whoop or a catchphrase buzzer sound. It can also be configured to vibrate-alert you and also triggers a flash light simultaneously.

The Nio can be set to go off anywhere between 2 and 25 meters and is a pretty geeky way to prevent ‘potential theft’ or losing gadgets.

But, that does not mean challenging audacious and chance-hungry people to steal your device. Strictly. The Nio is meant to prevent ‘potential threats’ not  accelerated threats. Be Careful.

Ben Housell, the 34 year old whizz behind the Nio and director of Tenbu Technologies, says “We see this device as a ‘gadget guardian’ – it’s there to protect your device if it gets mislaid or stolen.

Bluetooth® wireless technology is designed to be inherently secure. nio™ users have the peace of mind that their phone data cannot be accessed when using nio’s™ PIN enabled Bluetooth® connection.
