Top 5 Plugin Hybrid Cars to Lookout For – 2010 – 2011!

With the recent turmoil in the oil and auto industry it was important to take steps and make sure that such situations are avoided in the future. Companies and Governments reacted to the downturn and suggested measures to ensure a strong future for auto companies by offering more efficient cars.
Demand for fuel efficient cars top the list and companies are preparing to deliver and meet the demand. The shift in consumers buying behavior is the cause of change we are seeing in the upcoming cars.
Following is the list of 5 cars which will transform and drive the auto-industry into the era of much efficient, greener and environment friendly cars.
GM – Volt. Talk of the town – GM Volt announced on Tuesday has gathered much deserved attention for the fuel efficiency of 230 MPG (as claimed!). GM Volt becomes the first Electric/Hybrid car to offer a 3 digit mpg and looking at the competition and the trend we expect more names to be added to the list soon.
GM Volt will be available in showrooms in 2010 with a price tag for about $40,000 but customers buying the car in US will get $7,500 credit from the government which brings the price tag down to $32,500.

Nissan Leaf: Here is another attention grabber and if the claims are to be believed then Nissan Leaf offers a better millage when compared to GM’s Volt, however, Nissan Leaf is all-electric!
The car is expected to hit the market in 2011 and is believed to be much cheaper than GM’s Volt.
When fully charged the car can hit the top speed of 90 mph. Nissan Leaf offers about 100 miles per battery charge and costs $.90 for each charge.

Audi A1 Sportback Concept:Audi takes on the competition for environment friendly cars with its A1 Sportback Concept.
A1 Sportback Concept offers 60 miles per gallon and the car is capable of acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, now that’s not bad for a plug-in hybrid car is it?
The car is going into production this year in Belgium for the European market and will be available in US at a later date.
Price tag on this car is unknown, however, knowing Audi one should expect it to be highly priced.

BMW’s Mini E is another plugin hybrid car in the race for becoming a viable solution for the increasing fuel prices and to contribute its bit to the environment.
Mini E touches a 60 mph mark in 8.5 seconds and the millage ranges between 110-156 under normal and ideal city conditions.
The car is already out on the road but is not up for sale yet. Interested customers can lease the vehicle or even sign up for a test drive.

Fisker Karma is an all-sports car with powerful features. It goes 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and can reach the top speed of 125 mph. Karma offers 50 mpg in all-electric mode.
Karma is priced at about $88,000 and is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2010. Interested buyers can pre-book the car by paying a deposit of $5000.
The car drives the first 50 miles on all-electric mode.

Well... there is REVA for cars and something called GENXT for electric bikes in India.
I think thats all there is so far.. but the innovation happening around the world will certainly trigger Indian companies to pull up their socks and offer similar options in India as well.
