iTunes 8.0 offers one of the easiest ways of creating ringtones for your iPhone but it only convert songs which are bought from the iTunes store not the others.

There is still a way to create ringtones using iTunes. It’s not as simple as right-clicking and choosing “ringtone” but a few additional clicks will do the trick.

The steps in this article will show you how to create a AAC version of the existing songs and then convert the extension of the song and importing it to the iTunes ringtone library. Might sound a little confusing but I promise ill keep it simple..

Follow the steps below to create the ringtone of any song from your iTunes library..

First step after selecting the song you want to make a ringtone, Right-click on the song and click on “Get Info”

Go to “Options” tab and change the “Stop Time” to 0.30 sec to create ringtone which is 30 seconds long. You can also change the “Start Time” if you want the ringtone to start a little later..

Come back to the song, Right-Click and select “Create AAC Version”

Now you will see two versions of the same song.. One 3:13 mins long which is the original and the ringtone version which is 30 seconds long.

Right-Click on the ringtone version of the song and select “Show in Windows Explorer”

Right-click and click on “Rename”

Rename the extension (how to view file extensions on windows) from “.m4a” to “.m4r” and double-click the ringtone to open it in iTunes

You will see the new ringtone added to your ringtone library on iTunes

Simply sync the ringtones with your iPhone and enjoy newly created ringtone.

iRinger is another software which does the same thing and also saves a few clicks. The software is supported by ads, so its free to download and use.

Click here to download iRinger and here to download iTunes.

Note: Steps might differe a little on MAC.. Check out the comment from Junaid (thanks for pointing it out) to get it working on MAC! here

    it so cool!

    Good Post!!

This only works on windows platform.

A slight difference between windows method and mac is, the newly created ringtone file should be deleted from the music library and add it back to get the ringtone section updated on mac.

Windows version works just exactly as you mentioned.

    Once again good post :)

    Keep up the good work!

    Regards

Hey, I'm running into a problem where NONE of the songs I'm trying to convert have the .m4a at the end of their names. I'm running Vista 64 bit and have iTunes 8.2.1. Any suggestions?

    Rob,

Did you create AAC file of the MP3? once you do that, it will create *.m4a file.

Yes, I've carefully followed every step over and over. When I go to change the name of the file it never gives me the ".m4a" at the end of the name, only shows the track number and the track name, that's it. Example "01 Hells Bells"

Thanks so much for the info! i love all my new ringtones!

    Rob,

Seems like you don't have the option enabled to see the file extensions on your computer..

Please visit the following link (http://www.indezine.com/products/other/windows/showfileextensions.htm l) to learn how to enable viewing file extensions.

    Hope this helps..

Thanks for visiting TNerd.. keep coming back :)

GREAT post!!! Thanks for the help. :)

I am encountering the same problem as Hope had above. I am creating the files, but when I click it does not open the file in the Ringtones area of iTunes. When I sync manually it says it is unable to sync b/c the file could not be found...

Plz help I was super stoked about finding this! Thanks.

    Hi Andrew,

What platform are you running on? Mac or PC? Also, do you have the latest version of iTunes installed?

Please start all over and follow the steps once again before we get to the troubleshooting mode.

Thanks for the quick reply, Abbas. I actually fixed the problem. My system (Windows XP) was naming the newly created files I viewed in Explorer the same as the original, so the only difference was the new file extension. By simply changing the name and changing the file type to m4r it worked perfectly. Thanks for the great and easy to follow instructions!

    Glad it worked, Andrew!

Good look with creating new ring tones.. the newest on my phone is "Pants on the Ground... Pants on the Ground... Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground..." ha ha..
