Just weeks after iPhone 3.0 OS was made public, Apple has now rolled out a developer build of version 3.1, build 7C97D, along with the SDK, a pretty early for an update though.

The new iPhone 3.1 OS Beta release is meant for developers only so before you plug in your device to steal an update, think twice.

Apple has released the beta version of the iPhone 3.1 OS, perhaps to justify the fine-spun debate where some believe the hardware is guilty for the bugs and some throw the blame on the iPhone OS 3.0.

Apple iPhone 3.1 OS is available for all versions of iPhone and iPod touch, while the SDK 3.1 is available in versions compatible with leopard and snow leopard.

Let’s take a look at some of the improvements in the new iPhone OS – The Apple iPhone 3.1 OS (Beta).

When you update to the new OS, you will be able to decide on carrier preference, though it is not for AT&T customers. The MMS feature (which is optional) has expanded functionality where you can choose the size and quality of the picture for MMS video.

Improvements in the OS should also allow you to directly copy and paste in the address book without having to go through the regular edit procedure (you can even copy straight from the phone keypad).

If you accidentally sent a message to an undesired contact, you can cancel the message immediately while it is being sent and then say Phew! or just thank your iPhone.

Like to save a video from your email that you just sent? Well, this should now be possible with the iPhone 3.1 OS where users can just go the sent mail (where the video was attached) and save it into a camera roll.

The new OS actually lets you “edit” the recorded videos and retain the original ones unlike the “trim” feature which trimmed a selection portion of the video and overwrites the original one.

Most of you must feel great about the voice control feature of the iPhone where you can just press the button, speak into the phone and it does things what you have asked for. Now, you can use the same powerful Voice Control feature over Bluetooth.

The iPhone 3.1 OS is expected to fix the bug with Application icons where if an application was deleted, and a new application was installed, the new application would take the icon of the trashed one from its place.

This should sound unpleasant to you but the fact is that iPhone 3.1 OS update is more likely to disable hacks for tethering your iPhone.

I am not sure whether to expect a solution from Apple against the universally popular overheating issue of the iPhone in this update which is perhaps the most turbulent bug but remains unanswered for now, atleast until Apple makes an official announcement pertaining to it.

Is this Apple’s strategic move to counter the rapidly growing popularity of the Palm Pre? Will the new iPhone 3.1 OS will just be a bug-fix to the existing iPhone OS or rule over to counter the convictions against it? Let’s wait and watch until Apple officially announces more about the improvements!!

Now that the iPhone 3.1 OS Beta (for devs) is already released, it will not be too long from now when Apple pushes it to your iPhone/iPod as a public release, maybe it will take around 2 months or so for it.
