Google Announced Interest-Based Ads and Opted You In Automatically!
Google announced interest-based ads technology today. This technology tracks user-visited sites, looks for a trend and shows relevant ads based on the trends observed. For example if you visit too many travel sites, Google makes a note of it and shows you more travel related ads on Adsense partner websites and on Youtube.
This certainly raises concerns about user privacy and that’s exactly why Google published another post trying to address the Privacy issue.
Watch the video below to see how the entire technology works and how tracking user-information is justified.
Before I say anything about the privacy issue let me make it very clear that I do not have anything against Google Ads and I also understand that the tracked information is not personally associated with my Google account or me in anyway.
One thing that surprised me is the opt-in/opt-out methods. By default each of us is opted-in this new ad technology and each time your browser cookies are deleted your preferences are reset which means if you’ve opted-out once and deleted cookies you are opted-in again.
Installing a plug-in to permanently avoid the information from being tracked somehow does not sound right to me, sounds more like a forced installation, "not cool".

I would have preferred that people were not opted in by default, but since no personally identifiable information is collected, I'm fine with it. Actually, I think this can benefit advertisers, end-users, and publishers.
