TOP 10 Freenode Channels Offering Real-Time Help on Open Source Technologies!

mIRCIRC is one of the best resources when it comes to live tech-related help and advice. I spent about 2 years on IRC back in the year 2000 and initially it was nothing more than a place to hangout and have fun with likeminded people.

However the openness and the technology behind IRC sucked me right into it and I got more interested in how the technology behind it works and how we can build on it. I started with DALnet moved on to Undernet and later spent a lot of time on Freenode servers learning about different technologies.

Being a channel admin the first thing I learnt was shell scripting and spend days on egghelp.org and launched couple of bots on DALnet offering variety of services.

I couldn’t have done any of this without the help of the existing IRC users on these servers. Freenode is the hub of knowledge and real time help and tips from the experts. If you need any help regarding coding, scripting or advice regarding open source technologies then Freenode is the place to be.

Following is the list of TOP 10 Freenode channels where users flock in to receive and offer real-time help.

  1. Ubuntu: Official Ubuntu Support channel
  2. Debian: Debian discussion channel
  3. Gentoo: Gentoo Linux support chennel
  4. Python: Python Discussion channel
  5. ArchLinux: Official Arch Linux support channel
  6. Haskell: The Haskell programming language channel
  7. Django: Django discussion channel
  8. Perl: Perl Support Channel

If Debian and Ubuntu have such great help channels, then why the heck do we keep getting refugees from there in ##slackware? Traffic doth not a help channel make. I've popped into both multiple times to ask a distro-related question, and have either been ignored or attacked on both occasions. If you want a real objective measure of the most helpful channels, you'll need to have at least 24 hours experience in all of them. Watch who gets helped, and who gets ignored. Count percentages. I personally would argue that ##slackware, #slamd64, and #freedroid have all been immensely more helpful to me than any of the channels on your list, and I strive to this day personally to make sure that they stay that way.
