Google Extends “Organize the World’s Information” to Tracking Humans!

Google LatitudeGoogle announced latitude today. Its a new feature added to Google Maps which lets your contacts know your current location on the map. Though its being called as a Social Networking based LBS. I wouldn’t call it that yet, instead ill just stick with a LBS (Location Based Service). It will take a lot more features to turn this existing application into a Social Networking application..

I quickly downloaded the application installed it and invited few of my friends to test the application out. Once the invitations were accepted my friends started showing up on the map immediately. I am totally impressed with what this application has to offer currently and what its capable of in the future.

I’ve taken a few screenshots of the applications on Nokia N85 and Nokia N96. I did have some trouble installing the application on N96 but it eventually got installed after several tries. Surprisingly it does not support iPhone and Android-powered handsets yet.

Visit http://google.com/latitude from your mobile phone or click here to read more on Google Latitude

Install and run the application on the phone and detect your location first or find it manually

Go to options and select "Latitude" from the list.. and login with your Google Account.

This is what you will see when you login first.. let’s add a few friends

Either you can select from the Gmail contact list or just type any other address (I did both)

You can turn the tracking off any time and just go invisible on your friends map using the "Privacy" settings on the application

Here is what your list will look like once your invitations are accepted…

In case you are invited by a friend of yours, you will receive a notification on the top of the friends list..

Click on the invitation request and decide what you want to do with it.. (Options shown in the image below)

Get back to the Map View and this is how your friends will look like on the map.. Friends images and status msgs are pulled from their Google Talk messenger.

Once you spot a friend, just click on the picture and you can get the directions on how to reach him/her….

Once you click on the friends icon you will see few more options and one of them is "Get Directions"

In my case I was not so lucky as the application was not able to guide me through the route
