Hack to Record Videos Using Canon DSLR’s (Liveview)
A new utility has appeared on one of the Russian forums which lets you record video from a Canon dSLR which supports LIveView.
The software is installed on the computer, when the camera is connected to the computer using a USB it starts recording and stores the .avi file on the computer itself.
It is an interesting hack, however, I will be a little hesitant to use this technique if I am any serious about the video I am creating. Users are interested in cameras which offer a lot in terms of features and automation. This technique does not offer any of those as Canon dSLR’s are make to click pictures not record videos (At least as of now).
As mentioned on the original post, the resolution depends on the camera, 450D offers 848×560, 40D offers 1024×680 and 1000D offers 768×512.
Gizmodo sums it up perfectly well:
if you don’t mind recording three minutes of manually-focused, not-quite-HD video without any sound while carrying a tethered laptop and brûléeing your precious CCD sensor into submission, this is your hack!
Following video was shot using this hack with a Canon 450D
