Windows 7 Beta Installation Guide for Microsoft Virtual PC
![]() |
Windows 7 beta is available for download for anyone to test and explore the latest features offered by the newest OS on the block. I don’t know if I missed a lot by not making a move to Windows Vista but I am certainly hooking-up with Windows 7 right from the start.
So that’s what I did, downloaded Windows 7 beta and started testing and exploring. It is well worth it. This post will show you step-by-step how to download and install Windows 7 beta without creating new partitions or losing your existing one.
We will be installing Windows 7 beta beta using Windows Virtual Machine. So for starters click here to download Windows 7 beta and here to download Windows Virtual Machine.
Note: This article is written for Windows XP users. Steps and the screenshots shown in this article might not be the same on other O/S versions.
Run Windows Virtual Machine setup and start the application once the setup is complete. The “New Virtual Machine Wizard” will automatically pop up follow the screenshots below to complete the installation of Windows 7 beta.
This is the first Screen you will see from the “New Virtual Machine Wizard”, Click Next.

This screen shows you different options this Wizard offers

Now select Virtual Machine Name and Location. I’ve created a new folder “Windows 7” on C: drive and selected it as the Virtual Machine Location

Select Operating System: I selected Windows Vista from the dropdown as it’s the most recent release from Microsoft.

Assign Memory: This screen lets you adjust the memory assigned to the newly created virtual machine. I’ve changed the default value from 515MB to 1024MB which is 1Gb.

Virtual hard Disk Options: This screen lets you create a virtual hard disk. I’ve selected “New Virtual Hard Disk” as I don’t have any existing virtual hard disk.

Virtual Hard Disk Location: Here you can select the location of the virtual hard disk and also its size. I’ve placed it in the Windows 7 folder I’ve created on C: and assigned it 10GB of space.

Now just hit “Finish” to complete this Wizard

Once the Wizard is completed, select the Virtual Machine we just created from the list “Windows 7” and hit “Start”

A window will open with a blackground (nothing on it), Click on “CD” and “Capture ISO Image..” from the options and select the ISO file of Windows 7 you’ve downloaded from the Microsoft site

Now the Windows 7 setup is started. Following is the first screen of the installation..

Screen 2 of the setup:

Setup Screen 3:

Setup screen 4:

Setup Screen 5: Select Language, Time format, etc.. and hit Next

Setup Screen 6: The following screen runs you through the current status as it copies files, expands and installs them..

Setup Screen 7: Just hit “Install”

Setup Screen 8

Setup Screen 9: Accept license and HIT Next..

Setup Screen 10: Select “Custom” as this is a fresh installation

Select Screen 11: Select the drive from the list and hit “Next”

Setup Screen 12: You are almost done…

Setup Screen 13: Few more seconds and you are done..

Setup Screen 14: Setup is complete and here is the first glimpse of Windows 7 Desktop

This type of installation can only be helpful for getting familiar with Windows 7 but not for performance testing or any other performance related task..
Now that Windows 7 setup is complete and ready to use.. get to it.. and do leave a comment and let us know what you think about it…

Found your guide when looking for an answer to a Windows 7 beta in Microsoft Virtual PC issue. The problem starts when attempting to "Install or update Virtual Machine Additions" from the Actions menu. After reboot, Windows 7 will not start without restoring to a previous state. Without those Virtual Machine Additions, Windows 7 runs slower and some features are disabled. Any suggestions?
Figured out the problem... A link Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 original version comes up when searching for the download in Google (as it should). However, we should be searching for Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1. After installing the update everything works as it should. Hopefully, this follow up with help others avoid this same mistake. Happy computing!

Awesome set of instructions. Great piece of work. While none of it is all that difficult, it is great to have such a clear guide illustrated by so many screenshots.
Nice job!
