URL-Blocker: Working On a Deadline? Block Your Favourite URL for Improved Productivity

ComputerHelpComputerHelp released a software called URL-Blocker which is essentially aimed at working people who are addicted to social sites like Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon, Twitter, Youtube, etc..  because of which their work and timelines are affected.

So how does this software work? All you got to do is add a URL you want to block and then select for how long you want to block it. For example 1 day or say 30 minutes, once you are sure of how long do you want to block it for, hit the Block button and you are done.

Next time you visit the blocked URL during the time you’ve selected it won’t show you the site instead it will show you the content from .com.

To make it even better, there is no way of deleting a blocked URL (so don’t be ambitious with the time frame of blocking a URL) the only option you have is to uninstall the software. Let’s make that even tougher; uninstaller of this software does not come with it, in case you want to uninstall it you’ll have to download it separately.

Though the intent is good, the way it’s done isn’t.. here is why. Every time you try to visit a blocked URL you are shown pages from .com which are trying to sell you a new product, nowhere does it say that you are seeing this page because the URL you are trying to visit is blocked. There is more of self-promotion involved here than helping people out who want to get back to work.

Uninstaller is another thing which I think should come as a package and users should not have to download it from the site separately. The software does not even have instructions about how to uninstall it.

Thanks for the constructive review. I thought this tool might help my productivity and was thinking of installing it... but now I've changed my mind.

As you say, the separate uninstaller thing is bad, bad, bad.

I wonder if there is an application or browser plugin out there that does do the job well? I'd like to block out a few sites until, say, after work hours or at the weekend.

    Hi Ana,

I just checked their site and the uninstaller seems to be missing, shame!

Please call them at 1-800-897-1236 and see if they help. If that does not help, please leave a comment here I'll try to help you out!
