ClickForensics released the Click Fraud data for Q3 2008 today. The data on the report certainly shows the downward trend which is encouraging and good news for advertisers.

Overall click fraud rate has dropped from 16.6% from the beginning of the year to 16% in the 3rd quarter of 2008. Similarly Content network click fraud rate has dropped more than a % from 28.3% to 27.1%.

These numbers might still seem high but the dropping percentage of questionable clicks is certainly heading in the right direction.

One thing to keep in mind is that the numbers shown here are the ones which are detected as Click Fraud, the undetected activities carried out using new and more advanced techniques might be more than what we are seeing on these charts.

The heat map below sows which countries and regions are heavily involved in click fraud

It’s interesting to see countries like Sudan, Syria and Iran in red as compared to Russia, UK and France which top the list.

For example internet penetration in Sudan is .02% (as of May-2008) and seeing it in red might suggest that the click fraud activities are very high, comparable to other countries which might not be true. The figures and numbers are shown in percentages, so if the internet penetration itself is .02% and even a low number of click fraud activities might color it red.
