Keep Your Desktop Clean at All Times with CleanDesk Organizer
Now here is a windows utility which I am sure is made by someone who is really messy and good at coding. The first part of “Messy and Good at Coding” stands true for me too.
I am very messy when it comes to organizing my desktop and almost every week I put all the files on my desktop in a directory and name it “Desktop Nov-Week1-2008” and dump it in My Documents.
After several months of creating such folders, I started noticing that I was re-defining the term “lazy” as I didn’t even want to create such folder once every week. My hunt for a better solution began and that is when I found “CleanDesk Organizer 3.1” by Desktopminds.
It’s a wonderful utility which keeps a check on your desktop from time to time and organizes it for you. All you have to do is download, install and configure it. This entire process will not take more than 5 minutes.
Let me run you through the process of quickly configuring it.
This is the first screen you will see once launch the applications after the installation is complete. Click on “Create Sample Rules” (Application can be downloaded from here.)

The next screen you see is the “Settings” window of the application which lets you decide how often do you want this software to run the rules you’ve created and clean the desktop.

The “Rules” panel lets you create and configure rules

To create a rule, right click on the “CDesk Rules” side of the window and click on “Add new rule”

Now name the newly created rule which defines the functionality of the rule. For example I am creating a rule which will check my desktop for images and move them to a directory in “My Pictures” folder, so, I named this rule “Pictures”

The moment you create a “Rule” and name it, you will see a directory on the right side of the application called “Base Directory”. This is the directory where all the files matching the “Rule” will be moved to.
Right-click on “Base Directory” and click on “Define a path for this rule” and select a directory where the files will be moved from the desktop.

I’ve selected a directory “CleanDesk Pictures” under “My Pictures” directory

Once the root directory is selected, right click in the right panel of the application and click on “Add” to add a rule

As soon as you click on “Add” a rule will be created with a default extension value of “.ext”, right-click on it and click on “Edit”. Rename the extension value to the value of the file extension. For example .jpg, .png, .gif, etc..
Once the rule is setup click on “Accept” button on the window and you are all set to clean your desktop automatically.

Similarly you can create any number of rules. I have created another one for installation files as you can see in the image below

I couldn’t wait after creating the rule to see how it works. I clicked on "Action" and "Clean Desktop Now" to see it in action right away.
Here is the little pop-up you will see when you click on "Clean Desktop Now", Just click on "Clean now".

All the files have been moved based on the rules I created

CleanDesk Organizer also maintains a log of the files that were moved based on the rules creates. Just click on the "Log" icon to see the list.

CleanDesk Organizer can be downloaded from here. This application will cost you $27, but comes with a 30 day trial. Buy it if you like it during the trial.
