BitTorrent or BT is one of my favorite ways of getting stuff. It’s one powerful platform to share stuff. If there would ever be a list of top 10 Internet Technologies which changed the face of Internet my vote for BT would be #1. A small little torrent file that manages connections and tracks your download has changed the way we share stuff. Who needs a server to download stuff from when the power of P2P network helps you get everything without hurting too many servers and people involved in maintaining them.

Also, with almost all the things moving to a browser, including your IMs and some people talking about creating Operating System that runs from within a browser, talking your applications to a browser becomes mandatory. The draw back with torrents is that you need to have a client like utorrent to download and track torrents. And browser becoming such a formidable platform, I don’t see a reason why torrents should stay with dedicated client.

But this limitation has been resolved by Bitlet. Let’s see what Bitlet is:

BitLet is a very simple BitTorrent applet that lets you download any torrent file directly in your browser.

Bitlet is a program that enables the use of torrent file sharing protocol inside any Java enabled web browser without any need to install any desktop client. Let’s see how to download torrents using Bitlet.

1. First you’ll have to search for the torrent you are looking for. You can use Mininova, a popular torrents search engine.
2. To download the torrent file you choose, right click on the download torrent link, copy the link location (e.g. http://www.example.org/file.torrent) and then paste it in the input box at http//www.bitlet.org/.

3. You’ll be prompted to select the download location for your download. Select the location and your file will start downloading.

Bitlet also supports resuming downloads. Every time you restart a download just click save in the same location where you saved the download the first time (the applet will propose it by default), and your download will be resumed. I also uploads and seeds torrents and you can also check the download stats.
