Gmail Widgets: Docs and Calendar Widgets available on Gmail Labs!

Gmail Google adds more to Gmail Labs. It is Google Calendar and Google Docs widgets that are making the news this time around.

There is not much that you can do with these widgets sitting on the your Gmail sidebar but they certainly offer you a snapshot of the required information, last opened documents, upcoming meetings and events, etc..

Google Calendar widget offer two views, 1) A snapshot of upcoming meetings and events 2) A monthly calendar view along with the upcoming meetings and events view. I like the later one better!

As you can see in the image it offers three options on the Calendar widget.

Today: Brings you back to the current date if you are lost browsing the calendar.
Add: Helps you add a meeting or event on any given day. Just select a day from the calendar view above and type in a quick description.
Options: Let’s you choose from different calendars you can view information from.

Google Docs widget offers you a quick preview of about 5 documents. That’s pretty much what it does. Three options at the bottom of the widget lets you choose what type of documents you want to see, 1) Last visited, 2) Owned documents, and 3) Starred.

The other option “New”, shows you the type of documents that can be created and takes you to docs.google.com in case you click on any one of these.

Gmail labs is fast becoming a popular feature among Gmail users as it offers find Gmail improvements and options of customizing Gmail accordingly.

The option of creating widgets is more likely to be opened for developers outside of Google to encourage enhancements, however, data security will be one of the biggest concerns if Google decides to go that way. Until then, enjoy the existing enhancements at Google Labs!
