Adblock Plus: One of the most downloaded plugin on Mozilla. How fair is it?

Adblock PlusAdblock Plus does not go down well with the bloggers and content generation networks, especially who rely only on ads for revenue generation (that includes us), but that wont stop us from writing about one of the top downloaded plug-in on Mozilla network.

What is more disheartening is that the fact that the number of this plugin’s users are going up by the day. Thought few blogs have come up with a way to detect the ad blocking technology and blocking users from viewing their content or asking them to pay a yearly subscription. All time downloads are inching closer to 30 Million and the weekly figure is around 370,000.

I have to admit, this is the best solution for people who want to block ads on the pages they visit. The popularity of the plug-in can be gauged by the number of total and weekly downloads.

It’s fairly easy to use, first time you restart the browser after the installation, all you’ve got to do is subscribe to one of the existing filter list. That’s all; you just got rid of 99% of the ads on the internet.

This is causing great harm to the blogosphere as bloggers only source of revenue could be advertisements, and it’s totally reasonable to have ads as lot of efforts are put into running a blog/site including the infrastructure cost.

Though I like this plug-in which helps me block in-your-face ads/banners, I think it’s biased because it does not have an easy way of adding exceptions.

For example if you want to add tnerd.com to an exception list so that the ads show up on tnerd.com. Well, there is not easier way to do this.

It’s a negative approach to a great solution for sites/blogs that cross the lines to make some dollars. There is a page which generates exception code for the sites you mention in the text box. Why not include this option in the tool more visibly, EVIL!

After all services like Adsense, etc.. show you the most relevant ads with the content which helps you find stuff which you might not have otherwise. So, it’s not all bad!

Click here to download the plugin, however, be fair to the bloggers who put in a lot of effort to bring you the latest without asking a penny for it.

You should read my article on this subject Anti-Ad Blocking

I happen to think ad-blocking is out of line. It costs the publishers thousands of dollars a year to accommodate for people who want to skim the content and refuse to provide the publishers with any value in return. Consuming content is part of modern living, you cant get a news paper or magazine without ads, nor can you get you TV shows without them, despite the use of DVRs which is made for replay, not for skipping ads.

I liken the ad blocking to stealing. I dont think anyone would want to be on the other side, trying to eek a living from our creativity. Why are actors and musicians entitled to make money from people consuming their artistic works and web masters are not?

I have collected a whole lot of information on this subject and have recently release a technology that bypasses ad-blocking software. Of course it is up to the web master to use this Anti-Ad blocking technology with caution. With the power to deliver ads at their whim it must be critical for the publisher to recognize what is a good mix of ads and content. If people come to your site and are bombarded with ads every time the visit they will soon quit visiting your website.

I enable the publisher to deliver ads, if they abuse the tool its not my fault. People will vote with their clicks in the end.

Thats how it should be. I think that people will figure that in order to consume good content they will have to deal with the ads. Thats a fact of life and it will remain that way if I have anything to say about it.

    Ciao.

One of my first posts on our blog was about the AdBlock Plus plug-in. I titled it MySpace & Mozilla Firefox

I really get annoyed by ads on the internet. I understand that it is a source of revenue for many, however some of the ads can be somewhat inappropriate or at times intrusive. I really like AdBlock Plus for these reasons alone.

Well the only reason i use it is because my internet provider has not improve for years, 2 years ago i had a 1 MB internet and today i still have the same speed.

Besides the internet has become spam this, spam, those, spam spam spam spam spam!!!!

If it were not for Adblock i would have the half of my screen full of advertisement.

Well taht is my personal opinion, see you from M

Ads are annoying. Most people dont WANT to see them. If your content is worth money, then charge for it. I pay a monthly subscription fee to a number of sites I frequent to disable ads and still view content.

Actually, white-listing domains so that ads show on them is fairly easy for adblock plus. So if you want to support particular sites by allowing ads, and block ads on other sites, you can.
