Backtype: I am very important but take me for granted unless you absolutely need me!
BackType is a comment tracking service which tracks comments from across the web. How can you put this service to use? The site suggests that if you are someone who visits a lot of sites and leaves comments, then Backtype can become your online comment profile.
Techdirt recently lost their comments posted in the last few hours due to God knows what glitch. A post was out explaining and apologizing the readers who left the comments in the last couple of hours and now find them missing (Right thing to do!).
Immediately after the post went live BackType got in touch with the team at Techdirt and suggested that they might help them get few if not all of their comments restored from BackTypes database. It turned out that BackType had all the comments and Techdirt actually lost nothing.
I personally would have never imagined something like this would happen, but, such instances express the importance of the Web 2.0 startups which might not have a strong revenue mode but certainly serve a purpose.
BackType offers features like, a personal widget which can be stuck on the site to show your latest comments on the web or twitter your messages you leave on the web, etc..
Like I said, I see it as a service which I might register once, set everything up and forget about it until I really need something from it, it is certainly a one stop shop if you want to track your comments on the web. Also, I found this service to be a content-rich source of information because all of these comments are authentic provoked by articles worth reading and commenting on.
