Get Firefox Style Find Bar in Internet Explorer with Google Toolbar 5.

The browser war is on. Google launched chrome which is said to have taken significant market share. Microsoft didn’t wanted to stay behind and has launched a promising version of Internet Explorer in the form of Internet Explorer 8 beta 2. However, should Microsoft launch an entire new browser built from scratch which is much lighter and embraces better technologies. Well, we would leave this discussion for another day.

One of the most commonly used feature of any browser is Finding Text and frankly Internet Explorer’s find feature sucks big time. I mean shouldn’t such widely used feature be used in just one key stroke. But no Internet Explorer believes otherwise. To find something on a page rendered by IE takes more than one keystroke. Let’s see how typically the find box used to look in Internet Explorer till version 7.

Now that puts a question mark on Microsoft’s User Interface design team/department. However, with IE 8 beta 2 there’s been some improvement. But still there is a very important feature missing. You cannot highlight all the places where the word/phrase appears.

So is there a solution to this? Yes, there is. Now you can get Firefox style Find Feature. All you have to do is install Google Tool bar 5 for Internet Explorer. You can get the toolbar here. Once installed your find feature will look something like this (Hit CTRL+F) :

If the Find bar from of Google toolbar is not activated you can do so by following the steps:

  1. Click the Adjust Toolbar option icon on your Google Toolbar.
  2. Click the Tools tab in the Toolbar Options window.
  3. Select the Find bar checkbox.
  4. Click the Save button.

That’s it! Now you should be able to see the Firefox style Find functionality in Internet Explorer. Following is the video that shows the Find Feature of Google Toolbar 5 for Internet Explorer.

The Google Toolbar word find/highlight functionality is truely it's best feature IMHO. It's like a scroll wheel on a mouse: you don't realize how much you need it until it's taken away. Now, if I could only get Google Toolbar 5.0's word find bar to stay active (so I don't have to hit Ctrl-F to invoke it) AND more importantly, if I could move it to the top of the browser, it would be just as good as it was in Google Toobar 4.0. I don't know understand why user interface designers ever put controls on the bottom of the screen (like the default position for the Windows Start/Task bar) when all the menus, window controls, and most toolbars are at the top. Why make the user move their mouse repeatedly between the top and bottom of the screen? Putting all the controls at the top doesn't use any more screen real-estate and it makes the user interface easier to use.
