All you needed to know about Game Consoles. Xbox, Nintendo Wii, Playstation
Its good to know a lot about what you enjoy doing so that you can do it even better, I am talking about Video Games. At some point or the other all of us have played video games and loved our video game consoles. But how much do we really know about them? How much?
This article is all about video game consoles, it talks about everything from the first PlayStation to the latest Wii. When I was 10, I remember torturing my dad to buy me a third generation Video Game Console (ATARI). Did I say a Third Generation Video Game console?
Let’s see what a Third Gen Video Game console is.
Flashback on Video Games
The introduction of Video Games first happened in the Year 1971 and they had become an important part of the entertainment industry in US, Japan and Europe. The video game industry had a disastrous collapse in 1983 and a subsequent rebirth two years later.
The video game industry has seen growth and matured for over two decades to become a $10 billion industry. Over a period of 3 decades the Video Game Industry has seen consoles of different generations from the First Generation (1972 – 1976) till the present one i.e. the Seventh Generation (2004 – Till Date).
Today there are different kinds of Video Games Consoles available in the market. I have tried listing down the best in the market and what their features are. Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s second creation in video game consoles and is the successor of Xbox and its competitors are Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. The Xbox 360 was developed in cooperation with IBM,
ATI and SiS. The Xbox 360 was first released on November 22, 2005 in U.S & Canada. In its first year in the market the system was launched in 36 countries and also it was launched a year before Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. The integrated online service that Xbox provides is known as the Xbox live service.
The console connects to the service via Internet through a built-in Ethernet port or a wireless accessory and helps the user to download content such as HD movies, demo games, arcade favorites, TV shows and also lets the player compete online.
The Xbox 360 comes in three different versions:
Xbox 360 Arcade Preview The Xbox 360 Arcade model is ideal for traditional gamers who are more interested in the "old-school" and lighter side of gaming. The Xbox 360 Arcade was priced at $279.99 and early this week Microsoft reduced its price to $199.99 which has doubled the sale in the US.
The Xbox 360 Arcade console was the first one Microsoft launched. Arcade is everything you need to begin playing right out of the box, including Family Settings that allow parents to restrict game access for younger players.
It comes with a wireless controller.
The Xbox 360 Arcade console combines a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connector and a 256 MB of on-board memory for storing games and entertainment content. The Xbox 360 Arcade can plug into an HDTV-based home entertainment configuration and display game content at 1080i resolution, although the limited storage capability may send some Xbox 360 Arcade owners looking for a hard drive add-on peripheral.
The games included with Xbox 360 Arcade are full versions and not demos as listed below.
- PAC-MAN Championship Edition
- UNO
- Luxor 2
- Boom Boom Rocket
- Feeding Frenzy

Sony PlayStation 3 (80 GB)
Preview Priced at $499.99 the PlayStation 3 (80 GB) has almost the similar features and specification as the PlayStation 3 (40 GB) does. So what is the difference between the both?
Is it just the Hard Drive? No, that is not the only difference between the both.
The 40 GB hard Drive can be swapped any day. Below mentioned are some of the differences that I have been able to gather based on my research. The PlayStation 3 (80GB) offers an incredible graphic quality, stunning game-play, improved audio and visual fidelity that PS3 games are known for by maintaining the PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility through software instead of hardware.
The PlayStation 3 (40GB) does not have PS2 backwards compatibility, although it does maintain backwards compatibility to PlayStation 1 which the PlayStation 3 (80 GB) also does. The PlayStation (80GB) PS3 has 4 USB ports and also memory card slots whereas the PlayStation 3 (40GB) has 2 USB ports and No memory card slots.

Nintendo – Wii
Wii pronounced as “We” is the fifth Video Game Console created by Nintendo and is the successor of Nintendo Game Cube. It competes with both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 as a part of the Seventh generation Video Games Console.
Nintendo’s Wii was released in North America on November 19, 2006 and after that in Japan on December 2, 2006. A must know feature of the Wii is the Wii Remote, which looks like a TV Remote and can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Unlike its competitors the Wii does not have an internal hard drive, but uses 512 MB of internal Flash memory and also includes support for removable SD card storage.
Wii is the only seventh generation console not utilizing High Definition with a Maximum graphics output of 480p. It is also the first Nintendo console i.e. backward compatible with previous Nintendo consoles, where it can play all GameCube games and supports up to four GameCube controllers and two memory cards, along with Virtual Console which supports games from older systems.
Preview
A question you may ask yourself before buying a Wii would be, is it worth buying the Wii which does not have today’s Seventh Generation Video Console graphics? Nintendo never intended to compete in that arena, the Wii focused on innovative way of playing the game and having fun.
The Wii Console invites players who are young or old, expert or beginners. Wii players will use the Wii remote and you may notice a flick of the wrist to swing a tennis racket or a backswing and follow-through to send a golf ball flying over.
The Wii Remote, its online capabilities, Wii Channels, Virtual Console and Backward compatibility make this console so popular that it remains difficult to stay in stock. Are video games not supposed to be by default equal to couch potatoes? Well that’s not the case with Wii. It really is amazing to have a game which actually expects you to move and be active.
You do not have the luxury to lounge back and gain pounds here while playing games. People also call the Wii “A Little Box With Plenty of Power”. This Little Box priced at $249.99 has a 512 MB of flash memory with USB 2.0 ports and also a slot for SD memory expansion.
It uses a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named "Broadway" and a graphics chipset from ATI code-named "Hollywood" — deliver stunning performance. Instead of the traditional tray, Wii uses a single, self-loading media bay that plays both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system, as well as Nintendo GameCube discs.
