I recently got into photography and spent a bomb on the gears. I am happy that I got the gears and I am even happier that I can make some bucks out of the hobby that I got myself into. Yes, if you did not know, there are good number of services which offer you to not just display your work but upload your photos for someone to buy them.

Let’s see what are the various services available which will make your hobby of photography a paid hobby:

Shutterstock

One of the best services for selling your photos. For every download of photo that you submit, you get to make 25cents. This is a very professional service and have a very strict criteria for uploading images. You can upload photos in multiple ways which include FTP, HTML, and activeX. I was reading the reviews of this service and I heard people making over $1000 every month. Take this for motivation.

If you are serious photographer and religiously follow the procedure that ShutterStock suggests, probably this service is the best bet for you.

Pros: A very popular service and strong subscriber base, ensuring that once your photo goes through the process, the chances of it getting bought by someone is pretty high and so are your chances of making money.

Cons: I don’t like the model of paying 25 cents for each download. I think the model could get more versatile. I should have the right to put a bracket for the money I am willing to sell my photo.

iStockPhoto

This is again a very very popular service. Most of the people claim this to be the best and the top most service for selling photos. This only means that the site has more professional photographers than any other microstock agency. This also means that the site has great competition with in photogrpaher’s group. Which means you have to have a great photo to be able to get through the system of selection.

There’s been reports that the site is only catering to the the exclusive contributors and is imposing limits to upload photos on non-exclusive photographers. So if you are new to photography, chances of your photo getting through to the submission is pretty faint.

Pros: Best Paid service in the industry only if you are exceptional photographer. I did not register myself for this service just because of this reason.

Cons: Don’t bother if you are not interested in becoming an Exclusive contributor and be prepared to get a lot of rejections.

PhoTrade

This is service I came across recently. Still in beta, it promises to be a wonderful platform to display your photos and sell them. This service has no restriction in terms of who you are what you upload. Which means you can even upload photos taken from your mobile or a low end camera.

This is a perfect service if you are a novice or just starting your photography hobby. The good part is also that you can setup your own price for the photos.

Pros: Best for new photographers as it has no much competition and has a very versatile pricing model.

Cons: I am not sure if this site will attract enough buyers just because of the fact that they will have to struggle through some ordinary photos to reach those great pictures.

There are many more services. Following is a small list:

http://www.fotolia.com: One of the recent micro-stock photo agency.

http://www.dreamstime.com: This one started in 2000 and is one of the oldest.

http://www.bigstockphoto.com: Launched in 2005 with over 100000 images.

http://www.123rf.com: You will be paid a direct 50% of the actual price for each of your image sold.
