Install and Play Unlimited Games on Linux with PlayDeb

Who says Linux was for geeks. Talk about making things easier in debian based linux like Ubuntu and you’d be glad to know that debian installer, or package manage is the most easiest way to install applications in your favourite Debian based linux. You don’t need to get yourself invoved in typing those lines of codes in the terminal. All you have to do is to download the debian package for the application you want to install, double click on it and say install. Not that all the applications are available as debian packages, but there are good number of them and the list is growing.

You can find the list of deb installable applications at GetDeb. But what about games on linux. Seriously, I have struggled with playing and installing games when it comes to Linux. Although there are solutions like Wine and Cedega (to play windows games in linux), but the they have their own drawbacks. Wine gets to complicated to install games and Cedega is properitory (not free) and hence takes away the charm of gaming on Linux. But there are some good games available for Linux. The problem is there was no dedicated platform to get and know about all the games for Linux.

This problem was taken seriously and is now being tackled by PlayDeb. Let’s see what is PlayDeb.

Playdeb is a gaming repository for Ubuntu – aimed to provide titles already available on getdeb.net in an easier to install and update format.

Installing PlayDeb is as easy as a walk in the park:

Download and install updated apturl package.
install the playdeb package (if you’ll get a dialog asking you for confirmation, press Y)
or add this line to System-Administration-Software Sources, Third-Party Software tab:

deb mirror://www.getdeb.net/playdeb-mirror/hardy/// hardy/
