is recalling close to 73000 Sony Vaio laptops due to safety concerns. In a move made by The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Corp. declared a voluntary call back of Vaio Notebooks because of over heating and hence causing serious safety concerns. The commision said that wires placed close to the laptop hinges could get burnt due to over heating and hence result in Short circuit thus cause safety problems.

The recall is made for the Vaio TZ laptops sold between May 2007 and July 2008. ( affected models are the Vaio VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series.). So if you are the owner of any of the above mentioned model, please contact support and return the laptops to avoid any safety concerns. suggests users contact the company to see whether their computer is part of the recall, and if so to stop using it immediately.

says customers reported 15 cases of overheating, including a minor burn.

We are getting mixed reports in terms of the number of laptops which are being recalled. One of the reports says:

says it is recalling 440,000 units of Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to faulty parts that could trigger overheating.

Corp. (SNE) said Thursday that the recalls involve 19 models of Vaio TZ laptop series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008, including three export models.

The Tokyo-based consumer electronics company says a faulty wiring connecting the main body of the laptop and its display could cause overheating near a power plug or the rim of the screen, sometimes distorting the shape of the computer.

This is not the first time the company has faced the porblem. In 2006, recalled millions of laptop batteries used in its own and other manufacturers’ laptops because they could trigger a fire hazard, causing some computers to burst into flames.
