If I were to ask you what is the one greatest and most admired feature in today’s web browsers like, firefox, flock, opera, safari and Internet Explorer (Post 6 version), I am sure I’ll get an instant an anonymous answer that says “Tabbed Browsing“. I understand the importance of the time of our readers and hence I won’t dwell into tab functionality of browsers. However, when I say that you now have this functionality in Windows Explorer, I am sure I have captured your attention to read rest of the article.

QTTabBar, is a .NET based free Windows utility that converts your Windows Explorer in a powerful, Tab based explorer. Works flawlessly on both Windows Vista and Windows XP, this software greatly extends the functionality of Windows Explorer and makes your life much more easier and your work efficient. Let’s quickly have a look at how your windows explorer will look like after installing QTTabBar.

The highlighted area in the image is how your tabs in explorer will look like. However, to install this lovely utility, you would need .NET framework 2 or higher. I haven’t been able to test it on Windows XP however, I could unleash it without any problems on Vista. Please carefully read few forum posting to find about the known issues.

There’s more to QTTabBar than meets the eye ! It sits quietly next to your windows taskbar and brings various functionalities like QTTabBars Groups, Undo Closed Tabs and Application launcher. Let’s see what these are:

Groups: You can create various groups and launch them through the QTTa which sits near the taskbar. This means that you can create launch an explorer window which will have your grouped tabs loaded in it.
Undo Closed: This is self explanatory. What it does is, it opens the explorer windows that you just closed.
Applications: This is more or less like an application launcher.

I am too over whelmed by the features this niffty little utility has. And what makes it more powerful is support of plugins and not to mention skins. To fully unleash the feature if QTTabBar, start using shortcuts. I was wishing if someone could write a mouse gesture plugin or integrates in QTTabBar in future releases.
