A disadvange of antivirus software might be that it slows down your computer a bit. Haven't tried it yet but maybe the free portable sofware (sounds light) is something for you. It is mentioned at http://www.software-reports.com/virus-of-computer.shtml

I used Avast for years on my XP machines with great results.
Im using BitDefender now on my Vista machine and it works well.
