Compress PowerPoint Presentations up to 95%, Really?
One of my favorite sites Techcrunch, sited a product from PPTshare.com which compresses HUGE PowerPoint presentations. This service is supposedly useful for executives who very often share the presentations through e-mails or shared locations and can compress a PowerPoint presentation to up to 95%. WOW! Why didn’t Microsoft think of this before? Any way!
I took a stab at it and downloaded the trial version to see how well it works; I tried to compress a 2.54MB PPT file using PPTshare.com product. Guess what! It did compress but the compression rate was 27% and came down to 1.91MB. I thought of using some existing compression software’s to compress this file. These software’s certainly cannot be compared to PPTshare.com compression software as the files are converted to .zip or .rar upon compression but what the heck they serve the purpose, don’t they?
I compressed the same file using default windows .zip compression, results were not very impressive then I used WinRar to compress this file and it did more than what PPTshare could do. File compressed with PPTShare software was sized down to 1.91MB and WinRar sized the file down to 1.90MB.
If you further want to compress the file then you can use both the software’s. First use PPTshare and then compress it with WinRar the final compression of 2.45MB file came down to 1.40MB.
The point is, if the intention is to compress the file so that it is easy to share then why not spend on something which is multi purpose and compresses virtually every single format that exists instead of something which compresses only one format.
