Spam and Junk e-mails have always been a problem. I know people who had to abandon their favorite e-mail address because of 1000’s of junk e-mails being dumped in the inbox.
Gmail is not only SPAMproof (mostly) but also provides its users with intelligent techniques and features to keep the inbox spamproof even after using your e-mail address fearlessly with all kinds of sites.
Gmail offers two features that can help you keep your inbox spamfree
Feature 1: Using Gmail addresses with a dot (.)
Gmail does not recognize (.) in the Gmail address. For example if the original e-mail address is example.email@gmail.com you can also use e.xample.email@gmail.com exam.ple.email@gmail.com or e.x.a.m.p.l.e.e.m.a.i.l@gmail.com and all the e-mails sent to any of the 3 e-mail addresses I just listed will go to example.email@gmail.com
How can this feature be used to our advantage?
Here is one situation where you can take advantage of it. Imagine a site with which you are about to register but for some reason your instints say that this site will mess your inbox up by sending 100’s of promotional e-mails a day. Here is what you can do, register with a extra [dot] in the e-mail address (exam.ple.email@gmail.com). Later create a filter where all the e-mails TO; exam.ple.email@gmail.com goes directly to SPAM.
This could also be a little confusing at times if too many variations of e-mail address is used on different sites.
Feature 2: Using Gmail addresses with a plus (+)
Here is another feature which helps you organize your e-mails depending upon who it is being sent to. If you are not confused already, read further!
Gmail ignores everything after a plus sign (+) in the Gmail address. For example on blogger you can use example.email+blog@gmail.com to be notified every time a comment is added to your blog, now create a filter for TO:example.email+blog@gmail.com and redirect all the e-mails sent to example.email+blog@gmail.com to the "Blog" label in Gmail.

If I am not mistaken, Gmail runs mostly on Baysian filtering technique. Very powerful anti-spam technique . But not a very safe technique coz the chances of false positive.
