How to use Symbols, Unicode, Character Maps with Instant Messenger

Loading ...Whats the "IN" thing with the Instant Messengers like Yahoo, MSN or GTalk now a days? Any guesses?
This is what a character map looks like (image on the left). Follow the steps to locate the Character Map on the computer (Windos XP) Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map.
How can I add these characters to the status message? Million dollar question!
Here is how you do it:
1. Once the Character Map is opened
2. Double click on any of the characters you like in Character Map,
3. You will see that a Character appears in "Characters to copy" text box, Now click on "Copy"
4. Open your IM and paste it in there.
If you don’t find the character map on your computer you can search and download it from here or try online Character Map Here
Now lets pick 3 popular IM’s and see how well they display such characters on the status message. Yahoo, Google Talk and MSN Messenger.
Contender No.1 (Yahoo Messenger)
Contender No. 2 (Google Talk or GTalk)
Contender No. 3 (MSN Messenger)
From what you see above its very obvious that GTalk beats MSN and Yahoo in this feature. Gtalk displays all Unicode for HTML characters as it is. Second place goes to MSN and the third and the worst is Yahoo Messenger which shows weird questions marks instead of characters.
Now that you know how to use the Character Map, fill the world of IM with the crazy symbols.

i cant download it when i go to system tools in it there is no ''charecter map'' How else can i gt it??
hey, okay, so i had my whole name done in the"funky" writing, and when i pressed okay, to make my name change,, it went ack to the normal writing,, and i dont know how to fix that, any pointers?

Hey, whenever i put a symbol in MSN. After a few seconds, they will turn into weird & long symbols. What can i do to not make them change ? Please help.

what i was actually looking for was how to make them witch your keyboard on Facebook. for example: ♥ makes a heart. ive seen apples and other ones. i was wondering if there was something like character map that shows you. does anyone know of this?

So does ALT + 3 = ♥. See. Other numbers with ALT also make characters. ♠♦♣☺☻•◘○♥♀♂. etc.
how do we change the font on our computer? Cause When i ask ppl why does Symbols like ♥ Show up as White Squares on my MSN they say you have to Change the font of your comp....How do you do that!
Hi,
Fonts for each application can be set independently. So, if you are having trouble seeing characters on MSN then you should probably set the right font on MSN rather than trying to change fonts somewhere else.
Being that said, there are a lot of Addon's available for MSN,GTalk, Yahoo, etc.. which create nice looking animations and other graphics while chatting. Not having same addons on your computer might sometimes cause such things to happen.
Here is what you should to:
1) Find out if the other person you are chatting with is using any such addon for the chatting client. If Yes, then download and install the same.. this should help.
or
2) Find out the font set on the other persons messenger client and download the font and place it in "C:windows/fonts" on windows machines. Once you do that get back to your messenger client and change the font to the newly installed font. This should work 
I want to use the symbols as my actual msn name... but it doesn't let me paste on there. All of my friends get it to do that... how!!??
